just got my Jamaican cherry seeds from Oscar. Man they are small. I am playing a game with a couple of coworkers, 'find the Jamaican cherry seed.' we all agreed we need to go to the optometrist for new prescription contacts/glasses. what color are the seeds?

Muntingia calabura? The seeds are maybe slightly yellow? They might as well be transparent. They are smaller than sand. So maybe you should root them in cotton first to make sure they don't fall in between your soil when you water.

Yes they are very small; I guess you havent seen a fruit before( if you're talking about Muntigia C) they are like the fig seeds very very small, I guess for what I can see he send them in vermiculite; you may want to try to germinate them with the vermiculite other wise it would be a titanic job to find them......

Oscar was clear to point out on the bag sticker that they are 'very small seeds.'

this is like Where's Waldo for fruit seeds! He also gave good instructions on how to germinate. I just hope I don't sneeze!

I once tried to germinate some but they must have slipped into the soil, which was not deep.

Something i forgot to put in my instructions: Important that seeds be planted in full sunlight. They will not sprout otherwise.

I had them growing until i left them out in the rain, So i just bought a tree. Make sure you use a spray mister and you always keep an eye on them, their tricky.

i just sent a few people seeds.
what i did was squeeze a fruit while pressing down on a long thin piece of paper towel.
maybe 1/2 in to 1in wide... a few inches long
it will dry in an hour or so, less in the sun.
you can cut up the paper towel in very fine/thin strips
each strip having several seeds - maybe dozens

Or, after they are dry, you can use a knife or razor blade to scrape them off.
If i were to do it this way, i would use loose-leaf type paper
instead of a paper towel.

The problem I've had with Muntingia seeds is getting the germinated seedlings to survive beyond 1 month. They would sprout, look fine for a few weeks, and then turn brown. (I didn't transplant them, because they were so tiny.) I'm curious how it'll go for you and if there are any tricks to getting them to survive at that stage.

yup. first time trying. I just go for something that I think would taste good to be snacking on in the yard. will keep updates on progress. if it dies, so be it. then it's on to find someone that has trees.

I got mine from Logees, so you might see if they ship to HI if you dont find anyone on here selling live trees. I've also had high success rates in starting cuttings by lightly scratching the bottom few inches of bark, applying clonex gel, and just planting in good potting soil, so if you can find a neighbor with a tree you probably dont need to bother with air layering unless youre taking a large caliper branch. They grow pretty fast so a small cutting wont take long to get a good size once the roots get established.

funny thing is I posted the pic on my IG acct and my friend on Maui said he had the plant growing in his yard! I think for now I want to see this project of growing from seed to the very end. In the worst case scenario, my friend will be giving me seedings from fruit that has previously fallen!

so far as of dec 2! they are doing fine. maybe in a month or two can start transplanting them out!

ive got 2 air-layers going.
i peeked at one of them 3 weeks ago, and it had just a couple of fine root hairs.
its getting cool now, not sure if i should look again
or, if they will continue to grow roots ?
