Title: How do I handle this White Jade pineapple mess with all its pups?
Post by: Mark in Texas on June 28, 2019, 10:15:30 AM
White Sugarloaf and others are doing the same thing - all pups, and mama won't grow big enough to fruit.  Before the Jan. 2018 freeze hit I had some 4' or so wide, big enough to fruit.

The literature says to remove the pups for larger fruit. If you want more plants, you can leave them on and just up pot the entire bunch but you will likely get a smaller fruit.

Use a knife to cut them off the main?

I wasn’t that formal. I just broke them off as low as I could and planted the suckers, pups and ratoons. The clones root easily and grow fast with good fertilizer as you already know.

The increased heat and humidity over at Brads hoop house seems to be pushing the plants to grow twice as fast as they were growing over at my place.

That’s a future pineapple plantation just on the top of that one pineapple fruit!

Give it Mohawk cut.

Simon, been following Poway temps once in a while. I'd love to have highs in the mid 70's.  The warmer temps in Brad's greenhouse must help.  Mine hit 103F before I cooled off everything with cool well water yesterday.  Took my pre dawn walk in a cool 65F this morn. Saw where parts of France hit a record 114F the other day. Germany and Austria are hitting 100+ temps!  :o

I guess I'll take a knife to that mess as I don't want to pop the whole plant out and disturb the root system.

I dropped a couple of calcium carbide nuggets into 4 oz. of water, let it fizz for a while and then poured the water into my biggest pineapple's cup.  Let's see if that induces it to fruit.

Tried to cut and yank one out yesterday.  Just butchered it.  Time to dump them and break them away by force I guess.
