Which Annona to get ?

So i have been keeping a distance from Annonas
as i am not sure of the cold tolerance, and hearing about problems with pollination.

I am now thinking of taking the plunge.
but, have no idea what to get.
Im in New Orleans zone 9a/9b ish

Toptrops has some for sale now
and i dont know which one to get ?
i would love something that has a long fruiting season.
and hardy ...

Dream would be ideal but hard to find. You could put it on cherimoya which has some cold hardiness. The Dream itself has reported to take some pretty low temps. I think Adam tested it's hardiness as well. I think you missed the ideal grafting time. I wonder how cherimoya would do for you there. I think the sugar apple is the least hardy of the Annonas you listed.

If I don't have any and about to start over, I would go with growing my own seedling then graft on it. There are many benefits doing it this way, as was discussed at length on this thread initiated by Simon (Thanks Simon!).

which were about avocado, but I think the principle can be applied to many other fruit trees as well.

If you start the seedlings now, maybe by next Springs you can do your grafting; so you have ample time to select which variety to choose. PM me with your mailing address if you are interested with some cherimoya seeds...good luck!

By the way; you may not be too late to graft now, I just did 2 weeks ago, and it's already pushing through the parafilm, just in case you want to start now...

I think you will have the best luck growing from seed and grafting. The nice thing about that is that you can get into it at the low cost of seeds, and as the seedlings go through their first winter you will learn what will and won't grow and handle your low temps. After you find out what will grow you can afford to spend a little more on scions that will do well on the rootstocks you are able to grow.

In Central FL Sugar apple does great and I have had some success with growing and grafting Dream onto dream stock. Sugar apple seems to do really well in our humid climate, which I imagine NOLA has.
