Florida Cold Blast !
« on: January 03, 2014, 08:57:09 AM »
Hello Gang ;

Up here in NE Florida , wind chill last night thru this morning feels 19-20f
Trees look ok but its to early to tell the degree of Damage .
Was only able to cover a few trees out of Many .

What ever survives this winter will be the Only thing I will be growing for next season .

Wish every one luck with this wacky weather.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST
FLORIDA.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT.

...HIGH WIND IMPACT...
GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS WILL CONTINUE DURING THE MORNING HOURS AND
THEN BEGIN TO SUBSIDE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND ESPECIALLY THE
EVENING. WIND GUSTS THIS MORNING MAY STILL BE ABLE TO DOWN SOME
TREES LIMBS AND BLOW AROUND UNSECURED OUTDOOR OBJECTS.

...EXCESSIVE COLD IMPACT...
A PERIOD OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES IS FORECAST TONIGHT FOR PORTIONS
OF THE NORTHERN NATURE COAST. A FREEZE WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT
FOR LEVY COUNTY. EVEN WHERE SUB FREEZING TEMPERATURES DO NOT OCCUR
TONIGHT...A LIGHT NORTHERLY FLOW WILL COMBINE WITH THE COLD TO
PRODUCE WIDESPREAD WIND CHILLS DOWN INTO THE 30S. WIND CHILLS ARE
FORECAST TO DROP INTO THE 20S FOR PORTIONS OF CITRUS AND LEVY
COUNTIES.

Our coldest temps in S.Florida are predicted to drop to the mid-50s for two nights starting Monday and then back in the 70s & 80s  by Wednesday. No damaging cold weather here but lots of cool wind that can dry out delicate tropicals so keep everything watered.

I am supposed to see 29 but I actually put up my greenhouse in time for once so I should be good. I'm giving up on the lychees. They are not flowering again this season so they are being left to die. 5 years producing a grand total of 3 lychees = death.

Hope your trees do well - Old fashion C-10 Christmas lights- wrap then around, if your trees are small.....

The water spray method is controversial.....

Always keep your trees watered before a cold event. Dehydrated trees do worse in a cold snap. I just watered everything here. I brought my Durian trees inside as a precaution against the wind.

Monday/Tuesday...high of -2 and low of -18.  What a crock of shit this is going to be!  It's around 10 now and the GH door is already frozen shut.  Hope you guys in Florida don't get any prolonged low temps.  Good luck!

That sounds brutal, hopefully you have no problems heating your green house. It must be costing a fortune  :'(.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Around Raleigh NC we're in the teens at night and got up to 33 today for a high. Some of the wind gusts were up to 40 mph which meant covering anything in the ground would be useless. Next Monday and Tuesday is when the real trouble starts, supposed to see single digits at night and daytime highs below freezing. It will be sunny so the greenhouse will be fine during the day. I heat it with an old wood burning stove which puts out a lot of heat but means I get very little sleep. I'm not complaining, getting to spend the afternoons in there gardening in the spring like temps makes up for all the hassle. It just seems funny to hear people down south worry about lows around 50. All my plants have made it through nights with the lows in the high thirties inside the greenhouse (when I've slept through the alarm clock). But I focus my collection on things that are not too delicate.

Monday is going to be pure devastation for NE Florida !
Temps are going down to the Teens , I have to deploy my emergency action plan as of today ! .

But I will loose a big percentage of my Trees that are in the ground , the temps will be in the lower teens ! ..

I got to get the hell out of NE Florida !.
Best of luck to everyone who will be effected..

Null...natural gas heat and not driven by any electricity at all so should be good.  I've actually lowered the temps drastically this year to give some of the larger plants a rest period.  I'm hoping like hell to kick off some first blooms come spring.  So my heating bill will be no where near as it has been in the past.  And even then it wasn't all that bad.  But I definitely miss how warm it used to be!!  No fun to be out there now!  LOL!

Haven't heard from Pug lately.  I bet she's busy scrambling to protect her mangos!  Good luck to all and hope all your plants get thru this in good shape.

teens? yikes. yah, most everything we grow down here would croak at that temp. Might wanna start checking into what temperate fruits grow there.
