Ilama on Atemoya rootstock
« on: April 04, 2014, 03:19:48 PM »
Here are some attempts of Ilama onto Atemoya rootstock. It's been about 3 weeks. Some are starting to push and others are swelling. Is it to early to tell? I did about 15 grafts and they are all either pushing or swelling. Everyhting was a veneer except for one cleft.

I did about half Genova Red and the other half Pajapita.

The Ilamas are really starting to push though one pushed and died.. :(….I've been feeding them 5-1-1 fish emulsion fert mixed only with rainwater…these grafts are about a month old now..

this Pajapita has taken off the fastest:

a trio of Genova Reds pushing good:

Here is Cherimoya on squamosa after a month its pushing flowers(I can't take credit for this graft though)

I had no takes on my annonas last year. The only thing I'm doing different is using the rubber bands. I have had more success using them om both mangos and annonas.

Here's an update.. a total of 7 ilama grafts took…3 failed…I seem to have more success with veneer grafts. 4 Genova Red and 3 Pajapita in total.

This one below I did one scion wrapped in buddy tape and the other unwrapped…they both took just fine...

While ilama enthusiasts are focussed on a thread, I have a question.

Maybe someone can help me identify my 4 ilama seedlings to variety. They came from Florida as a mix of red and white genova as well as pajapita if memory serves me correctly. Some references say scratch the bark and if it is reddish it is a red fleshed type and if it is green it is a green fleshed type. One reference said new leaf fleshes are red on red fleshed types also.Is this true and are seedlings of different varieties much different in appearance?

The red genova has reddish purple new leaves.  Har has stated that red is a recessive trait in sugar apples so the same might apply and the seedlings might not be red.

yes foliage is purple on the pink/red fleshed types...and green on the white fleshed types.

I've seen sometimes where the foliage of a purple leafed type can temporarily flush green...but the stems were still purple.

What luck I have then. The chances of me retaining 4 green ilamas out of the 2 reds and 1 green type are 3x3x3x3 or 1 in 81 assuming equal germination.
I bet those freeloaders I gave the rest away to all scored genova reds and pajapitas even though it looked like random selections.

Hi mikesid,

Are these Ilama still alive? How does the graft union look? Any updates would be very helpful. Thanks!
