Does anyone have any info on Galaxy mango? Not much has been talked about it.
-
From whatever little I know, it is a Keitt seedling. Said to be a black mango with a taste similar to Keitt. Introduced about 4 years ago but not many people have had success with the variety. A friend of mine has it. Never flowered.

I put a 3gal. in the ground in 2014. It thinks it is a Valencia Pride with its growth habits. Yup no flowers, maybe next year.

Maybe its reaching for the galaxy?

Tasted it at brevard fruit club tasting
Had heard bad things so I was surprised it was better than expected. Not to the point I’m going to plant one but I wont cringe before I taste next time
Grower has had a few problems with the tree also.

only mango that I knew about that turns black at ripening is kala pahad or kala pahar from India. it is excellent mango.

saw that post but couldn't find picture of ripe black mango.

The ones I saw were green.

I got some Galaxy budwood and grafted it onto some Manila rootstock. Got flowers off two grafts this year and one of the grafts held fruit until it was not quite golf ball sized, then the fruit aborted with the intense heat in June. The young fruit was dark / "black" the way Nancy is but more uniformly dark.
-
So this year I got 8-10 fruit on my 5 year old, potted tree. I picked them early, middle, and let some drop. Not a one turned remotely dark. Mostly yellow, very round (and clean) fruit, with some green. Fairly fragrant, deep orange fiberless flesh. However, the last one ripened about 2 weeks ago. So definitely not late season - more mid. Taste was mediocre/good but deteriorated very quickly once completely ripened (drops). So not late season (I'm just harvesting my Keitts now).
In short, I think I got a mislabled plant (or else, Mike Bender did). Anyone else have a similar experience? Bender's grove used to source them direct from PIN. Bought it newly grafted in a 1 gal. I imagine we have other posters on here who have the same plant. I'd like to know your experiences.
BTW, its a 15-gallon for $50 if interested in pickup.

Man, with that description you are going to have people banging down your door for that tree. You may even get into a bidding war for it.

I think we may have met at Bender's Grove once. I bought the tree for a friend. It has not flowered even once.
-
Perhaps. Were you the one looking for Kesar?
I suppose Bender got a mislabled bunch. I can't identify the tree. The only thing is has in common with a Keitt seedling is its lanky growth habit.
Post back if your friend's tree ever fruits.
