The fruits haven't fully formed yet. I had some in Ecuador. They tasted a bit like fig. Here is a photo i took in Ecuador of the fruits:

This tree is about 8+ years old:

I got original seeds from this pod from a local tree:

I've been fruiting this one for a while but hadn't tried eating any of them till today. The exterior is a bit hard to crack. It is spongy, kind of like tropical almond (Terminalia catapa). I did finally crack it with a hammer. The interior is much bigger than tropical almond, or even regular almond, so more than worth the work. The taste was sweet, crunchy, and juicy. Quite good even in raw state. All in all quite worth growing, especially given the tree is very ornamental, and the long spiked flowers spectacular.

Sorry did not take any photos of interior of fruit as i ended up smashing the nut with the hammer.

Does anybody have any information on the quality of this fruit? I have a good sized potted plant and am wondering if it's worth planting it into the ground?

60
If it hadn't been for the fact that the kepel tree flushed spectacular bright colored growth i wouldn't have even noticed that it had also at the same time flowered. The flowers are contained inside the tree off interior branches and not visible from far off.

The 2 trees i have are over a dozen years old. They both flowered at the same time. It's been so long since i planted them that ii had kind of given up on them ever fruiting, or more precisely, i had put the possibility of them fruiting out of my mind.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse in the Snow (Nebraska)

Interesting concept of building greenhouse underground and funneling the temperatures from underground to help keep heating costs way down.

I received this information from Jim West:

"The Plinia sp. (which i previously called Eugenia subterminalis) from
the ecuador amazon, with common names of mulchi, giant mulchi, and
shawi, has been identified by lucia kawasaki, from the Field Museum,
as Plinia inflata.   originally described from amazonian brasil.

still no identification of the dwarf mulchi."

I have seeds of mulchi and giant mulchi right now. If anyone is interested PM me.

After very long wait just noticed that the Artocarpus elasticus tree is starting to fruit for the first time. The tree is huge, probably over 40 feet tall. So a couple months ago i tried some 0-0-50 to try to initiate flowering, and it seems to have worked!  8) I didn't get to try the fruit yet as some of the ones on the ground looked like immature aborted fruits with no arils inside. The big fruits are way up on the tree.

Got to try my first guabiju. They take a long time to ripen and i don't think i got a perfectly ripe one, but the taste seemed similar to strawberry guava (cattleya)

The tree is very productive. I will probably add these seeds to my website seed listing very soon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Comparison of 4 Lychee Cultivars
« on: July 02, 2015, 04:44:08 AM »
As season is coming to a close for most of the lychees, except Kwai Mi Pink (B3) which is still going strong, decided to do my first attempt at a brix test. Here are the contestants:

The order of ripening of these cultivars was, first Brewster, second Kaimana, third Sweetheart, fourth Kwai Mi Pink.
The brix ratings were:
Brewster: 19
Kaimana: 18.5
Kwai Mi Pink: 18
Sweetheart: 17.5

Pros and Cons of each type:

Brewster Pros: Large fruited, good rose scented taste and fragrance, very sweet.
Cons: Large seeded, very unrealiable producer in the tropics.

Kaimana Pros: Large fruited, large percentage of chicken tongue seeds, good balance of sweet and tart, reliable producer in tropics.

Kwai Mi Pink (B3) pros: Very reliable and prolific producer in the tropics. Very late season.
Cons: fruits a bit on small side. Flavor not as complex as other types. Unusual pink color may not be a big hit for commercial production as people mistakenly think it's not fully ripened.

Sweetheart Pros: Very large fruited, very juicy, nice tasting, large percentage of chicken tongue seeds.
Cons: very soft texture. Production light, at least for first producing year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Book: Wild Fruits from the Amazon
« on: June 01, 2015, 06:21:35 AM »
This is a fascinating book with beautiful color illustrations and line drawings. He describes over 2000 speices. It's a 2 volume set, with only the first having been published, and the second volume due out soon. It's very informative and unique in that the author, Marc Van Roosmalen is a primatologist. This book, and several other fruit books he has written, come as a result of over 2 decades studying monkeys in the Amazon jungles. One of his most important observations is of what the monkeys ate and how they dispersed the seeds of the fruits they ate. So there are many unique observations not usually found in books about tropical fruits. There are keys of the families for the botanists, but also plenty of interesting reading for the hobbyist. Highly recommended.

Since some of you think i have a small hand, and you like to compare fruit size with a baseball, i got this baseball just for you:

I think you will be able to see these starapples are closer to soft ball size. I'll get one of those next.  ;)

A friend recently brought me over some giant canistels to try out. Wow! They were mind blowingly good. I'm not a huge fan of canistels. But these ones i devoured right away. I liked them so much i forgot to take a photo.  :'( They look like my Phillippine Pointed but are much wider, especially at the top. They were much better than the PP and also way better than Ross Sapote.. Much more moist, and none of that strong cloying musky taste most canistels have. Another big plus was zero latex. I will have to beg my friend to bring me more fruits, and hopefully some scion wood. Will post more later if i can get them.

According to this CRFG Propagation chart it's not possible to air layer persimmon. Just want to make sure that is correct?
