Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Banana variety tastes
« on: March 27, 2024, 02:19:15 PM »
I love Raja Puri. Bananas taste like ripe plantains.

2
Pictures of fruit and seed would be nice. Pretty early for ripening mangoes right now in Fl.

3

'Coy'
Very enjoyable to eat. The Taste reminded me of eating a very ripe star fruit. Brix was 13.
Had another 'Coy' fruit that was sweet and juicy with very little if any, tart. Brix was 12.5.

'Tori'
Nice sweet and acid balance. Brix was 12.

seedling of 'Turkey'
Sweet and juicy with the nice sharp tartness to it. Brix for different fruits: 11, 13, 15, 18.
The 18 brix fruit sampled made me think to my self I might as well be eating a sweet clementine. Delicious! Pop em in the mouth with no peeling.

'Sherry Woods'
Sweet with a nice tart component. Best tasting fruit had a brix of 13 and 14.

'Angelino' and 'Pupello'.
Both were disappointing. Pupello would never ripen properly and split on the tree.
Angelino would look perfect and clean. Soft flesh, juicy, but taste lack luster. Brix ave. ~ 10.

Loquat season in winding down in my yard. 'Ellen Marker', 'Yehuda' and 'Sherry Woods' still left.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 'Rosendo Perez' sapodilla
« on: March 21, 2024, 07:16:33 AM »

Sampled  the first fruit this morning. It was soft and a tad on the over ripe side. Cutting it into sections was effortless and revealed it had only one seed. On first taste, it reminded me of family trips to my uncle's farm in Aripo, Trinidad where he had a huge 30ft tall Sapodilla tree on the east side of  his home. We'd always look for fruit there first when we arrived. The flesh was smooth with some specs of grit that complimented it's mouthfeel. Brown sugar syrup soaked pear slices with a hint of brandy :). I'd say the skin is partially edible- not like a ripe Alano.  Brix was 17.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Rosendo Perez' sapodilla
« on: March 20, 2024, 08:21:19 AM »
Just harvested 2, larger than large, sized fruits from my 7gal tree for the first time. Got it from TopTropicals in May 2022 as a 3gal and pretty much kept it in the nursery shade till stepping up in October 2023. At the time prior to purchasing, I think only Hopkins Nursery was propagating this and then TopTropicals had it available (I think they graft their own now. Not sure). I think Rosendo Perez was someone significant in Florida horticulture in the 1900s. There is an atemoya and caimito/ star apple named in his honor. This sapodilla could be a recent release. As a collector, I just had to buy :) and investigate for myself. Will sample this evening.

Excalibur nursery in West Palm beach had em in 15gal when last I checked over a year ago.

Absolutely. I love geeking out on brix readings. Still have lots of 'Angelino' and 'Pupello' fruit left as well as 'Cori', 'Ellen Marker', 'Oliver', 'Sherry Woods', 'Yehuda' etc.

8
Angelino and Italy (seedling)

'Angelino'
My cell can't capture the 'orangeness' of the color of these fruit. But it dosen't matter cause the fruit were juicy but sour lol. The tree is just too young.
Out of all my in ground loquat tree varieties, 'Angelino' and 'Pupello' have been prone to fruit splitting.

'Italy'
Orange fresh. Had a nice apricot flavor that was quite enjoyable. It did not taste as sweet as it's brix reading...18 :O. 2 yrs in ground.

9
Lots of varieties ripening up to do a comparison.

'Strawberry'
Small fruit. Juicy. Not as sweet. Mild citrus notes. Very clean looking fruit.

'Oliver'
Small size. Juicy. Clementine flavor.

'Sherry Woods'
White fleshed. Really good. Nice sweet tart component and juicy! Brix was 11.

seedling of 'Turkey'
Long fruit. Sweet. Juicy. Flesh easily separated from the skin while consuming. Clementine flavor. Brix was 11.

'SES #2'
Juicy and sweet. Soft orange flesh. Brix of 12. Reminiscent of eating a mandarin.

'Tori'
White fleshed. Round fruit. Sweet and juicy. Very productive for age and size of tree. Brix 11.

'Angelino'
Orange flesh. Juicy. Not very sweet but tart. First time producing for a young tree. Looked for the best to include in this comparison. More to come.

'Pupello'
Tart. Tasted like it needed more ripening. Lots of seeds- 5 per fruit. First time producing for a young tree. Looked for the best to include in this comparison. More to come.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees for 25 gal pots long term
« on: March 09, 2024, 05:04:48 PM »
Precocious sapodilla varieties would do great! 'Silas Woods' and 'Makok' come to mind. I have 2x of both in 3gal and they've been pumping fruit for about a year- and barely 4ft tall. Just make sure you like the fruit texture (grainy/ sandy). 'Alano' is probably the smoothest but not as precocious or 'dwarf'.

« on: March 07, 2024, 07:35:33 AM »
Anyone enjoying 'Skinner' mulbery yet? Just had my first fruit from a tree planted in ~ May 2022 (3gal FL). They mature pretty fast. New growth popped up around mid February. Slender fruit that start out green then matures to a yellow and finally mid deep red. Sweet with more of a cantelope with mixed berry flavor. Pretty good.

I waited as long as I could for the 'school bus orange' color :) but I finally had a chance to taste cv. "Tori" (a selected seedling from My Kids Nursery in Central FL) this morning. Fruits seems to get  big and round (consistent with other fruit on the tree) with white flesh. On first bite, very juicy and sweet with a nice mild hint of citrus. "Refined" is what came to mind. The skin was thin and had 2 seeds in it. I've been using organza bags (4"x4" walmart) to protect the fruits from birds and it working so far. Tree was obtained from GreenDreams nursery. This May would be 2 years in ground and barely 3ft tall. More loquats fruits from this and other cvs to come (Oliver, Yehuda, Zesty, SES#2 etc). Please share your loquat impressions for this season was well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees I gave up on

Chilean guava (Ugni molinae).

In the span of 5 years I have bought at least 10 of these plants all due to having replace dead ones. Regardless of their iterations, they are extremely sensitive. IME just touching the branches lightly to inspect growth I saw said branch die back in a few days for no reason. What's available to buy are just too small and expensive to keep trying to grow. I'mma pass on these for now. Soursop is easier to grow then these in FL 9B lol.

Glad to see this frame "flat pack" come to fruition  :) . I've been somewhat interested in Dragon fruit (still looking for one with a brix greater than 16 ;D ) but the frame needed for function, durability and aesthetics has been deterrent for me. This satisfies all those criteria. I've been to your place and the setup is beautiful. I'd be interested in something like this. I think most of us has spent a ridiculous amount on not only a tree, but seeds and seedlings- that may not come through to type ;D . And they are even more of "us" types outside of the forum. As long as your final product cost covers the materials used and the value of time in designing, fabricating, and being away from your family.

I think utilizing social media (eg fb dragon fruit lovers/buy/sell etc groups) will get your product known fast. Show pics of your current setup with these, ppl will be interested. It may mean you handling all the sales personally. What the weight of the "flat pack"? Would it's dimensions deter shipping?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Smallest Mango Fruit Variety
« on: January 26, 2024, 01:48:48 PM »
Neelam/ Neelam is indeed a small sized mango for what's available in FL. So too is "Starch". I haven't seen what the "Starch" mango in the US looks like, but if it's anything like the the ones in Trinidad (there is talk over there about they're being 3 types lol), Starch is small and a waayyy better mango. Okrung's I've seen are small. And Golden Nugget.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: plant id needed

It was a rescue from a forum member in 2019 (unknown variety). At the time the tree was close to 7ft tall. I was looking at the graft union today and the growth *does* appear to come from what's left of the graft. But who knows what the green sapote was grafted on.

Thank you all for the attempts to id. Looking through my notes, I remembered this was a dug up, mature rescued Green sapote that died back due to seasonal frosts (was in ground). I don't know what root stock it was on (mamey or green) used but does it look more "Green sapote" or "Mamey sapote"?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: -5ºC Fruiting coconut palm in Australia.
« on: December 03, 2023, 04:44:29 PM »
There are 2 fruiting coconut palms that I know of in Sebring, FL. They were transplanted when they were about the size of the palm in the picture and have survived mostly unscathed in a warm spot for about 10 years now. In contrast, we had a dwarf coconut palm that got burnt back by frost every year until it finally died in a particularly hard freeze.

I've seen a bunch of shorter trees (~15ft tallest branch) in Sebring (Thunderbird Rd) and Lake Placid (Lake June Rd) and on US17. Trees in the city near paves roads and structures seems to take the cold weather due to obvious reasons. I'm trying 2x Dwarf in rural Lake Placid just under a Oak tree canopy for 3 yrs now. Seems to be working out nicely. Freeze/ frost with nutrient deficient myakka sand, it struggles- though mangoes love it minus the frost as long as you have irrigation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone tasted Juliette mango this season?
« on: December 01, 2023, 07:16:57 AM »
Can't believe that was over 10 yrs ago lol. That tree was in Pembroke Pines at my moms place for 9 years. Took very well to tip pruning- would get bushy, thick and rounded with it' already naturally short inter nodal growth! Would flower consistently. Hold allot of fruit that, to me, didn't taste like 'Julie' but shape and size wise, I see the resemblance (Two other mature Julie trees are on that property still). Disease resistance, this tree was spotless (I foliar sprayed micros regularly when I lived there). Brix would be in the mid 20s consistently. The only con would be the short season. All the Juliette's would ripen in 2-3 weeks.
The reason why it gets lost among the crowd is because they are better flavor mangoes out there. Sweet Tart is still my no. 1. LZ... a festering 2nd. Blew my socks off. Thanks Zands :).
