Strange canistel seed shoot growth
« on: October 25, 2015, 05:25:35 AM »
I'm not sure if this is common but the shoot emerging from the seed is shaped like a wing and appears to be multiple shoots fused weirdly together?

This is a very slightly older seed from another source under the same conditions. It emerged and grew as you would expect.

You sure the first two shots are canistel and not abius? Abius do that.

Aren't abiu sprouts a lot fuzzier?

Pics of my abiu:

Admittedly, I don't have much experience with canistel or abiu, but the few I've seen look different.

looks like a canistel for sure,

I have seen my ross sapotes do this...also miracle fruits.

from what I can gather, it seems to cause problems sometimes, hindering growth.

most of the seeds that sprouted like this seemed to decline, or lack vigor.

I'm not sure if this is common but the shoot emerging from the seed is shaped like a wing and appears to be multiple shoots fused weirdly together?

One normally chucks things like this--- why take up space with an obvious genetic defect?

Thanks for all the input!

One of many pots doesn't take up that much more space and i thought (before my bubble was burst :'( ) maybe it's a cool defect like those dogs that don't have the gene to tell their muscles to stop growing he he.

It's healthy for now I suppose if it damps off or looses vigor its no bigloss as I have others but it looks too much like a plant wing coming out the ground for me to bear killing it outright. I'm too curios to see how it grows ;D
After all if it weren't for curiosity I wouldn't be growing all this stuff anyway ;)

I think i've noticed this type of unusual sprouts in other pouteria species like abiu and green sapote. But don't really know if this causes a problem later on or if the plant grows out of it.
