Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is there a way to prevent suckers after cutting down a tree?

I want to remove a tree without it sending out suckers constantly.  Is there a way to kill a tree first before cutting it down?  I got 2 liquid ambers that needs to go and I want to replace them with two longans but I don't want to deal with suckers!  Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Imported Mangosteen

I just bought a bag of mangosteen and the lady that runs the shop mentioned the fruits were imported from Mexico.  Are mangosteens usually radiated?  If a radiated seed somehow germinates, would the radiation change the genetics of the fruit?  I just wanted to grow some seedlings out for fun if possible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Transplant shock. Help!!!

One of my guava tree is going through transplant shock.  It is an air layered tree that is about 1.5 feet tall.  I planted this tree in the ground last March but I transplanted it into a 15g pot about 3 weeks ago.  I noticed that the leaves were droopy 2-3 days after it was dug out. so I covered the canopy with a clear plastic bag.  The leaves perked back up but 80-90% of the older leaves have already fallen off.  Is it a goner?  Is there anything I can do to save it?

I wanted to buy some jabos directly from PIN and they put me on a waitlist for some grimal and paulistita.  They called me earlier about some jaboticaba crown #1, #2, #3, and Savannah #5.  They also have Sabara.  Is this the common small purple jabo?   Anyone heard of these?  If you did, how big are the fruit?  Im only interested in the larger size fruit trees.

My backyard is no where near as nice or organized as most of the members here but I just wanted to share a few photos of my back yard in So Cal by the foothills.

This one of the two grafted cherimoya trees from temple nursery.  The cultivar is unknown.


A couple of fruit set




Here are two African pride fruit hanging from a graft done earlier this spring.


Here is a variegated cherimoya in a 1 gal pot.  Not sure if the variegation is stable or what caused it.



Some tomato vines.  There were some sun sugar cherries, tangerines, black krim, zebras, and a few others. They were all indeterminate and became invasive.  I already pulled them all out.



Anyone else growing kakai pumpkins?  I am mainly growing them for the seeds without the hull.


Here is a Brewster lychee.  It's been in the ground for 3 years and no fruit so far.  It did bloom for the first time this year but no fruit set.


This carambola has also been in the ground for three years.  It bloomed throughout most of the year for the last three years but the flowers just dries and falls onto the ground without fruit set.  Maybe my soil is too alkaline?  This is the first fruit in 3 years and its not perfectly formed.



Here is a franken-loquat on two rootstocks with big jim and champagne grafted.  Big jim is on the top on a cleft graft.  Champagne is on a wedge graft below big jim.




Some lychee airlayers from my friend's tree.  I started the airlayer earlier this March but they were not removed from the mother plant until this July.  It's flushed out nicely.  Anyone know what kind of lychee this is?  The fruit is quite large with a large pit.  One fruit out of a hand full will have a chicken tongue seed.  Another Brewster or is it a Mauritious? I did 3 airlayers and the tallest is about 5 feet tall.

I am looking to graft over my mom's unknown longan that is producing inferior fruit.  If anyone have an established sri chompoo longan, please let me know.  I would like to buy some budwood.

I also bought a 15g jaboticaba.  I believe this is the one that produces the smaller dark purple/black fruit. I am looking for scions of larger cultivars (paulista, etc) to make a cocktail jaboticaba tree.

If you're able to help, please message me.  I'll pay for the budwood and shipping.

I took down four of my flowering trees and decided to replace them with a hedge of guavas since we like guavas so much.  So far, I planted two white Indians, a Malaysian, Mexican cream, giant Thai, and an unnamed seedling pink guava.   

I saw a "tropic white guava" from home depot the other day and I was debating on whether I should get it.  I am not sure who propagated this tree since the tag was missing.  I only recall seeing the label on the pot calling this a tropic white guava.  Would it possibly be the same as La Verne nursery's tropic white?  These guava names all sound too generic.  Also, how is the flavor and texture of this guava?  We are more into the crisp texture guava types.

I have a guava sucker that I wanted to airlayer but it's slightly thinner than 1 cm.  The wood at the lower end is already brown and hard but should I wait for next season?

I am looking to add my first mango tree in my Southern California backyard.  I am looking for a mango tree with minimal to no fiber and better than average in flavor.  I am currently looking at Angie, Fairchild, and Nam doc mai.  I have no experience in mango growing.  What would you recommend or what is best suited for our climate?

I bought two grafted cherimoyas from Temple Nursery about three years ago.  There were no labels at the time of purchase.

Does anyone have any idea of what type of cherimoya this could be? 

I bought this from the farmers market but the fruit from one of the trees look exactly like this one below with little bumps all around.

Picked up a few trees today from Charley in Hacienda Heights.  3 guavas, another longan, and my first atemoya!  The atemoya is an African Pride.  Too bad the other varieties were not available.

Taiwan seedless
The leaves are round and the fruit is completely seedless (from what I was told).


Taiwan "7 inch" guava
Anyone heard of this? 


I have another Taiwan "Pearl" that I forgot to photograph.

Hi.

I am new to this forum and a tropical fruit newbie.  I currently have a few tropical fruit trees grown in my backyard.  2 cherimoyas, 2 lychee, a longan tree, and a few other things.  They were bought from a local nursery and planted over two years ago.

This fruit was picked from the neighbor's house.  Is this is some sort of atemoya?
