Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Low Chill Peaches for Orlando
« on: January 15, 2015, 07:28:37 PM »
i second the tropic beauty. i also have tropic snow, uf sun and uf one and they are all exceptional. i never noticed larvae, but i've never really looked. are they really noticeable? i let mine ripen on the tree completely, so i must have eaten them if they were there.

i do have the larvae problem with my papaya, but hopefully it's just them. i spray them with a product called azamax weekly, but it seems to have little effect.

we're predicted to be in the upper 30s just north of the bay.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Big Red Sugar Apple
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:05:51 PM »
I gave my first big red sugar apple to my friend to taste (he's eaten many annonas, and is a very experienced fruit collector)

he said it was the best sugar apple he's tasted!

I've not eaten a whole fruit to myself...I've only tasted a portion of one at Noel's house...so I'm excited to see how this variety compares to the common types I've been eating.

the common types have a fluoride / toothpaste flavor, that I don't really appreciate.

I'm hoping the big red doesn't have this!

I'm about 10 days away from harvesting my 2nd of 3 fruits on my 10 gal big red tree.

I'll be sure to share my honest opinion about this cultivars' flavor!

it's been a long while since i've had a sugar apple but i also remember the toothpaste aftertaste...  i'm interested in this cultivar if there are any available.

edit: adam, do you have any grafted plants available? i'll be in brevard next week.

let it latch onto whatever it's reaching out for--preferably some natural wood. dragon fruit is an epiphyte (sp?) so the roots are a good sign.

They are a big [no pun] problem for me on Maui. Sometimes they have such a heavy thick shell we can not stop them but have to throw against hard rock like surface. The problem become worse in pastures as the thicker shelled ones are not trampled.Tthus are naturally selected to inter bread  & produce a very hard shelled strain.
So keep stomping while you can.

gotta love natural selection... please keep them away from the bay area!

Does anyone know if they bear true? I have one growing that came from a nice dwarf.

364
picked my plant up a few hours ago. wayne's a stand up guy and the tree i got was very nicely grafted (saddled) with awesome structure. definitely going to plan a future trip.

365
any updates? i am heading down to bradenton in a bit so i'm already committed but it would be nice to have a taste report.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tip prunning tips
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:34:01 PM »
i tip prune my soursop continuously to promote bushing and it responds really well. it's fruiting now and i'm still tip pruning the branches without blossoms. hopefully that won't affect anything. soursop seems to grow taller than wide without tipping. i also tip prune my mangoes on each branch, but they are still small (under 4').

it is common for some varieties including madame francis. it is referred to as a polyembryonic seed and the tree will be similar to the parent tree.

i was thinking of keeping it in a pot, but don't want to waste my money if it isn't going to produce fruit. any local experience with them?
