Mango ID help
« on: July 07, 2018, 06:19:04 PM »
My elderly neighbor has an old badly damaged ugly mango tree absolutely covered with hundreds of these small 4-6 ounce mangoes. The flavor profile is basically mild/bland one note Asian.  No significant fiber but very firm even after they drop from the tree.  I have been trying to ID this mango for awhile.
Closest match I can find is a Sabre mango. Any educated guesses?

Blessed be the man who plants a tree knowing he will never live to enjoy it's fruit or shade.

Looks like turpentine. Are they mostly yellow?

Not turpentine - no strings, just very firm & flavorless.  As a matter of coincidence I just saw this on "Sabre" another root stock mango and the appearance & description are identical.  Hat tip & thanks to Craig at Sulcata Groves who just video profiled Sabre which was my first clue.  I had never heard of Sabre before and if you watch Craig's video you'll understand why.   As far as I'm concerned mystery solved.  It's very prolific & maybe it's a good rootstock so maybe it's unfair to judge it for flavor or eating qualities since it's not intended to be an eating mango.

Ok thanks. Turpentine is definitely not flavorless although very stringy.
