What Is It?
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:06:13 PM »
This plant is by my sister in law's condo by the side of a building mostly in the shade.
I thought it was a poorly placed papaya of some kind, but then it seemed to flower.
Might not be a tropical fruit plant after all.
Sorry for the bad pictures - I stopped by after dark.

Don't believe it is either...though I don;t know what it is.

Jatropha multifida have more pronounced spike pattern on the leaflets.  From these photos, the leaflets do not seem to have these patterns...plus, I believe the flowers should be red is it were the J. multifida.

Yeah the ones I have seen have had red flowers, but thought maybe others colors existed, after making a closer comparison, its definitely not a multifida

Fatsia japonica

I thought you were joking at first, but no joke here.   I was expecting my google search of your ID to show a sumo wrestler. However, no wrestler, you are right on the money.

All my years spent living in Tokyo (where this plant is common) and I never even thought of it being the perfect name for a sumo wrestler!!! I don't know if they have a common name. I now live in Raleigh NC and everyone just calls them Fatsia.

Thanks, you nailed it.
I googled "fatsia japonica" and the description and pictures were a dead on match.
Case closed!  :)

Fatsia is a good winter bloomer around here. On warm days it attracts a lot of late season pollinators. They grow all sorts of freaky version in Asia. There is also a couple of hybrids between it and English Ivy (Hedera helix) - it's kinda cool when you can blend things from two different genus's. Check out Fatshedera.

This plant is quite popular as a garden plant in Funchal and around the Island 8)
Time is like a river.
You cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again.
Enjoy every moment of your life!
