Is this a "Sapote" fruit?
« on: July 13, 2015, 02:10:29 AM »
My friend gave me some fruits he only said it's "Sapote" from his own tree, but has no idea what kind of Sapote this is nor the the variety of it. It's somewhat mushy and sweet, but has 2 relatively large seeds and 2 or 3 small ones inside it. I also notice, that this fruit is easily bruised as well. I have one year old seedling in 5G pot from the fruit he gave me last year, and I am curious to know what variety this one is. Does anyone know what this fruit is and it's proper name? Here's some pictures...thanks!

White Sapote. Don't think you can tell variety.

It grows tall fast bit takes a few years to bear fruit. My 5 seedlings grew 8 ft in the first 2 years but still no fruit after 6 years. They're all grafted now. I'm still hoping for fruits from the seedlings themselves.

Yes, mine grows pretty fast too, now about 3 ft tall. I grafted with it's parent tree last week, but I am not convinced it's going to take, since my friend gave me older woods. Good luck with your seedlings, fyliu!

I bought a 8-yr old 15-gal seedling seedling I planted two years ago, the seedling is yet to fruit, Exotica called it Sunglow or sungold.

I realize this is an old post, but thought maybe I could get to know what my tree is from Exotica.  Are Sunglow, sun gold, and golden nugget white sapote just name variations? Or are they different cultivars?  I bought a grafted sunglow  from Exotica per the label, but couldn’t find any info on it online.  When I recently went back, the lady working there kept referring to it as gold nugget.  I thought maybe she was mis-naming until I saw this forum also referring to gold nugget and sungold. I have suebell, sun glow, and Vernon and trying to determine best location for each based on growth habit.  Any info would be helpful.

Sorry Bee, I am still not familiar with sapote, it was only about 4 years ago
did I become aware of this excellent fruit tree existed.
So, hopefully some Sapote growers out there can help...

Meanwhile my 4 years old 4 ft small tree with mature grafts on it has started
to show tiny flowers. I am wondering if I should let it continue to fruit or
cut off so it can grow bigger...?

Every flower won't set fruit.  See what does get set.  I can get fruit off of my dwarfed Vernon white sapote which is just less than 3 ft tall, but 15 years old.  I let 1 or two fruits mature and they are much smaller than my full sized Vernon tree fruit.
