Seeking Sapodilla scion exchange
« on: July 21, 2015, 03:47:44 PM »
I have a few young scions of my Sapodilla Hasya that I like to trade with any variety I don't currently have, preferably Makok, Alano, Molix or Silas Wood.

My young tree is from PIN originally, bought it last year, and has plenty of flowers but seems to have difficulties of fruiting, so hopefully with other varieties grafted on it, this might help. Let's trade/exchange..., thanks!

I would say it is not fruiting cause its too young.  Be patient, let it get some size and age.  Putting additional grafts onto it will surely not help speed up the fruiting process.

Rob, thanks for taking the time to give useful advice! Bought  from Mimosa Nursery East LA, has been flowering ever since, more of them in the last 6 months. So I just need to be more patient then, but I also like to have some other varieties in a single tree, so the multigrafting idea interest me a lot, considering also the limited yard space I have.

Fyliu, thanks gor your cooperation, I will send you a PM.

Bmoya, last time I check Mimosa East LA published their prices on their website, so you can make your price comparison. I got a feeling their so called "On sale" prices are somewhat permanent...

Any idea how to select good scion material and where best to graft? Mine's a starburst shape at 1.5 ft with a smaller starburst at 6 ft.

It's best to graft when the juices are flowing I think.

By the way, that yellow tag sure looks like a ZHPP tag.

That is the color and print type used by Zill High Performance Plants in Lake Worth, Florida.  Either that tree was propagated there or someone is foolishly imitating their tags.

I think Champa nursery is foolishly copying their tags.

rliou, can you spare a couple makok scions? I have alano to trade if you want. Sending you a PM.

Also, what's the recommended way to graft and prepare scion wood? Would it help at all to girdle it for a week to a month?

PIN is great, but I don't think they ship to CA, not positive.

Thanks Rliou, I am sending you a PM.
Thanks!

Doglips,
You are right, but I didn't order the tree directly to PIN, but from a nursery in LA.

Samu,

The price is not listed on mimosa website anymore.  How much did you buy yours for and how big was it?

Update: So far I was able to obtain Makok and Alano scions by way of exchanging through this forum members: Thanks "Fyliu" and "Rliou"!
I don't have Silas wood yet, and I still have plenty of scions to do more trading. So, any Silas wood owner (or other varieties that I don't already have),  lets trade... thanks!

ps. What I have  is Hasya; now has Makok and Alona scions grafted on it. I can add more varieties on this tree.

Sam,

Any luck with your grafts? I don't think mine are working. I think I'll just leave it and try again next year.

Thanks for the scions, Samu and rliou.

Hi Fang,
Well, from the 5 or so grafts I made 2 weeks ago, one seems to be bursting the tape, --hope it's for real-- that's Robert's Makok. Maybe we should gave it more  time:

By the way, I saw this for the first time, the "bulb" like thing in the middle, is that Hasya baby fruit?

Edit: typo; changed "think" to "thing"...

Robert,
I used all clefts grafts 2 weeks ago except one veneer. I have yet to have a successful veneer grafting, so far.

Fang,
Thanks for confirming that is a little fruit forming! As I have mentioned earlier, my Hasya tree started to flower since I purchase it last winter, and more so beginning last Springs, but never formed fruit. So, I started "helping" to hand pollinate them this Summer. Whether this little fruit resulted from my action or happened naturally, I don't know. Sorry Fang, maybe I should do a study and tag the flowers when I hand pollinate them?

Bhk,
I don't think so, as some have commented here, maybe my tree is just too young, hopefully the more experience Sapodilla owners can give you a better answer.

My failed grafts were veneer. I too don't have much luck with veneer. I need more practice before trying again.
