Medium Height Banana Plants
« on: September 23, 2018, 05:11:17 PM »
Greetings, im looking to expand my banana plant collection. Wondering if any of the members here can recommend a banana plant variety that is productive and has a nice size amount of hands that grows about 6ft-10ft max and is some what cold tolerant.

I think you'll have a hard time finding all those criteria in one plant. I've got Veinte cohol- consistently fruits at 7-8'. Fruit is mediocre but I keep it because it looks great inside my screen room. Dwarf namwah fruits around 12', fruit is excellent. Dwarf Brazilian fruits around 18' - also excellent flavor. I used to have blue java but removed it - was prone to toppling in high wind. Fruit was excellent though and got about 18' tall. All are cold tolerant- I'm in Oviedo and I don't cold protect them. Have about 5 bunches fruiting now. Feel free to pm me if you'd like to stop by and see how big they are. Probably offsets that I could share - been lax about culling lately. Good luck!

Raja puri is short but dwarf cavendish makes way more fruit.  Both stay small.  Not sure about frost tolerance, I dont get frost.

Raja Puri is one of the few with cold tolerance.  Dwarf Cavendish is not...plus RP tastes wayyyyy better.

Dwarf Namwah. It takes the winters in SoCal no problem, w/o any dieback

Goldfingers, Dwarf Namwah.
I prefer Goldfinger over Namwah for taste. But that's me.

Goldfinger exceeds 10 feet easily.  Namwa tends to hit and at times exceed 10 feet too..

I grow namwah, blue java, ducasse, red dacca and pacific plantain.

Of those namwah is the most cold tolerant. Blue java consistently out produces it though many people state the opposite for elsewhere. Blue java is only 10ft here. Namwah is only about 8, Rob is growing some big namwah!

The Ha'a Ha'a is super productive, and gets to about 6-8 feet. You can cut the stalk without getting on a ladder. The fruit is on the small size and has a good flavor.
