Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thin my Mangos?
« on: May 26, 2018, 02:45:13 PM »
My Gold Coast mango tree has been in the ground for three years and is about 4 - 5 feet tall. The trunk diameter is about 2" below the graft line, slightly smaller above the graft line. Last year I removed all the fruit. This year it is setting quite a bit of fruit, for the size of the tree. I'd like to get some fruit this year. Do I need to thin out the fruit? Or should I just wait and see how much of the fruit it drops without my help? The fruits are about 1 inch now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fish Emulsion
« on: May 06, 2018, 01:22:10 PM »
I've read several threads about using fish emulsion to feed fruit trees (mangos, citrus, apple), both as a foliar spray and directly on the soil. I picked up a gallon of the Fish Fertilizer at Home Depot yesterday. I wanna vomit from the smell of rotting fish! No one mentioned that. Anyone know of a de-odorized product that might be less offensive? How long should I expect my yard to smell like a fish dump? Should I sell the house and move elsewhere?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Mango Leaves are Huge!
« on: July 10, 2017, 10:06:58 PM »
I planted my Tequila Sunrise mango tree two years ago. It is still quite small: about 4 - 5 feet tall. A few weeks ago I was concerned because it had not pushed any flowers or new leaves yet this year. Right after that it started showing some new buds and has pushed out the biggest leaves I've ever seen on a mango. The new leaves are over a foot long and 5 inches wide. It looks very odd on such a small tree. And it looks like there are more to come. Hopefully, this is a good thing.... :o

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Tree Spindly Growth
« on: October 01, 2016, 12:18:37 PM »
Last year I planted two trees that I got from Tim Thompson: Tequila Sunrise and Gold Coast. They are planted about 10 feet apart. The Tequila Sunrise tree seems to be growing quite strong with a trunk diameter now 1.4" and standing well on its own. But the Gold Coast tree keeps trying to grow tall and spindly. I when it starts looking leggy, I cut it back to encourage branching. It does branch out, but then each branch again starts growing long and spindly/weak. The trunk diameter is still only about 0.9" and I still have the tree loosely tied to support stakes to keep the wind from blowing it over.

Does anyone here have any experience as to why a young tree grows so spindly? Is that just the nature of the variety, or should I try feeding it something to help it along. I stick with organic mulches to feed and condition the soil, but it still looks a bit weak. Any suggestions?

As a side note, has anyone heard from Tim Thompson in the last year? I haven't seen any news on his website for a couple of years. Just curious.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to cull mango fruit?
« on: March 25, 2016, 01:12:04 PM »
I planted Gold Coast and a Tequila Sunset mango trees last June 2015. They are both flowering now and the Gold Coast is starting to form some small fruitlets. I expect that most of them will drop off naturally, but I also know that I need to remove any surviving fruits for the first two years. My question is, when should I remove them? Do I wait until they are pea-size? Dime-size? Bigger? Do I leave the flower stalk on the tree until it dies off naturally? What is best practice?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's bugging my mango?
« on: August 24, 2015, 04:57:54 PM »
My two grafted mango trees have been in the ground for just over two months and are doing well. They both have new flushes of branches with beautiful leaves. Every morning when I come out to have a look, I see a couple of these bugs on the new branches.  Not on the leaves, but on the branches. When you move toward them, they scoot sideways around the branch to hide on the other side. So I call them "sidewinder" bugs. I generally shake them off and they fly away. This one flew onto the fence where I could get a good picture of him. It is about 3/4 of an inch long. Can anyone identify it and tell me whether it is destructive? Should I worry?

Thanks!
