Is My Lychee Tree Sick?
« on: May 23, 2019, 05:04:28 PM »
My lychee's leaves have suddenly turned yellow and brown. I've never seen it do this before.
Is this something I should worry about? I'm trying to figure out how to post a photo here.

Oops! Sorry about that!
I should have mentioned that this tree has been in the ground at least 7 years and has been  and is now bearing fruit.

OK, then that's odd. You should post a picture.

Yes, post a picture. Is it the Sweetheart variety? Are the leaves drying up and mostly staying attached to the plant? Does it affect the entire canopy?

There is fungal disease that has been killing seemingly healthy Sweetheart trees in SoCal. One of my friends lost his huge Sweetheart and I lost a smaller one. I was able to save one of my trees by spraying it with a powerful systemic Fungicide. I was only able to save it because I caught the disease as it was just showing and my tree still had green leaves to uptake the Fungicide.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's either a Mauritious or a Brewster. And yes, it's affecting the entire canopy. Most of the yellow and brown leaves are staying on the tree. It looks like Autumn in New England and it's getting worse every day.

I haven’t seen the disease I’m talking about affect Mauritius or Brewster. Please post a picture. Did you fertilize recently? Too much fertilizer salts can cause Lychees to dry up.

Also, do you notice the branches or twigs drying up? They look wrinkly when the vascular tissue starts drying up.

I used Abound. I did one foliar application and it stopped the spread of the disease. This was about two years ago. The tree is perfectly healthy now and just set a very small number of fruit.

Don't think it's erinose mite. Here's a picture of the damage:

The Lychee disease I’m talking about has severe symptoms that just show up out of the blue on otherwise healthy Sweetheart Lychee trees. The disease seems to affect the vascular system of the tree and you can see drying up of leaves and stems. The leaves and stems typically stay attached to the tree. If I can compare it to another disease, it’s symptoms are very similar to Verticillium wilt.

Systemic copper might work but I don’t know for sure. I don’t believe regular topical anti fungals will be effective.
