Phet Pak Chong is a good one for SoFlo.  A very vigorous tree (meaning lush and super-healthy; as far as size, you can easily cut it back every year) that produces fruit without hand pollination.  I was very impressed with my tree.

I am more Southwest Florida but my favorite so far is the Lisa.
Tim which produced for the first time for me last year is very close.

I have a Geffner, it has no issues with scale like my sugar apples and soursop do, and it is a regular producer.

Where would I find this variety? Never heard of it before. Miami Florida

what I have been trying to do is grow some root stock and graft
my own trees. Since I am grafting atemoya I have been growing
atemoya seedlings. Some people prefer cherimoya or sugar apple for
root stock. Each Spring there are several sellers on this forum who
offer scions. I grafted a PPC and it pushed initially this past Spring but
it failed. I have heard Birula and La Habra Sun being favorites in CA and
I wanted to try those. I have seedlings now I am going to grow for next Spring.
I have a Na Dai sugar apple seeds and some Tim atemoya seeds from last year.
PM if interested. You could check with Fruitscapes they may have PPC available
this Spring?

Excalibur is the only place that I know that regularly sells it.

Yes, that's where I got it.

My two cents

I would go with Gefner if I only had to pick one since I think it better represents an atemoyas typical flavor better.
As in, it has some acidity to go along with the sweetness. More like a Cherimoya.

With that said Lisa is pretty amazing. To me, it tastes like the best sugar apple I could want.
I have a hard time growing sugar apples in my area so Lisa is a must for me.

I love the way Lisa looks and I get some “berries in cream” notes when I eat them, but I’ve had two die on me now for reasons unknown and I think I recall reading somewhere on the forum where Lisa is known to have branch die back when pruned 🤔 As far as geffner goes I don’t have one but friends that do don’t have any issues and I definitely agree with Skahn’s subacid background tartness is delicious with geffner. I haven’t had dream or PPC yet but hear they are delicious, also Excalibur has seedling PPC trees last I was there which isn’t same as PPC...some people don’t care that’s fine too.

Thanks for the replies guys much appreciate the information. I’ll check Excalibur when I get some time although if they are seedling I rather plant my own. This forum is awesome and have learned a lot from you guys!

Keep in mind that due to the work from forum members like "JF" this list might change in a 2-3 yrs as a recent influx of new varieties has been introduced to Florida's fruit enthusiast community.

Check out some of "Vernmented" threads if your interested, he seems to be a year ahead of most of us in terms of fruiting them in Florida.

With that being said, from personal experience, a good backyard grown Gefner or Lisa is hard to beat.
I've only heard good thing about PPC or Dream too

Do you guys have any of the mammoth line there? How do they perform? KJ pinks/Paxton prolific is a good performer here (from small selection I’ve tried) and as good a fruit as I’ve had locally.

Not in any official capacity due to plant breeders right.
I'm sure a few people have them growing, hopefully they'll share their experiences in a few years.

Tim is a seedling of an Australian variety (probably from PM line)

The older varieties are free to use, but I haven't heard very much in the way of positive feedback on these varieties outside of Ausieland. I still grafted them anyway based on the high praise they receive from the Australian growers.

what one did you plant Oolie? Obviously don’t know what the fruit there are like but I would be surprised if you don’t like them, looking forward to your results :) Could be KP mangoes all over again haha.

Yeah, KP never caught on here though Leo Manuel has some excellent seedlings from it.
So far I have the standard Pinks Mammoth and the Hillary White. I have a graft labelled Tropic Sun, not sure how well it will do here given the dwarf characteristic. I've only read about these since grafting them and seem to find nothing but positive from the Southern hemisphere, and much ambivalence from those who have tried them from the West coast.

So there must be some merit, but we're talking about fruit snobbery.

I've been repeatedly told that Bacon avocados are dog food, but I really like them. So there's probably some amount of personal variance regarding the interpretation of quality. My preference may not be yours, etc.

Which is why I'm of the mind of try it all, and decide for myself.

Geffner is finally flowering and holding fruit after about 3.5 years + in ground. Was starting to wonder about it.

A friend of mine has grown Geffner in South Florida with pretty good success.
