Amazing Changsha tangerine survived 8F freeze!
« on: November 05, 2018, 06:14:01 PM »

This Changsha tangerine is located in an open area in Northeastern South Carolina  where it survived an 8 degree freeze in Jan 18. Looks amazing to have tolerated that kind of brutal freeze!

I've seen even younger trees survive similar temperatures in Central Texas. Tasty but seedy fruit.

How many hours below freezing did it endure during that event and still be able to survive and set fruit this year?

I don't have any idea.. IT was a cold week!   You could do some research on temps for Lake City SC for the first week of Jan 18 and that would tell you  the answer.

I didn’t get above freezing here that week. I lost everything that wasn’t covered and heated except one dunstan.

That's exactly our problem here too! I lost a citrange Cunningham Livurce to a freeze that lasted over a week.

That makes me really hopeful here.
I just looked up the record and 8F is the coldest temperature that's ever been recorded in Olympia, WA.
While you were being hit with an unusual freeze on the East Coast, there were big camellia bushes everywhere in bloom here on New Years Day.
I've even run into a few reports of non-hardy gardenia varieties sometimes being able to survive outside in this region.

Here are the temperatures for the town of Lake City SC for the first week or so of Jan.  Naturally it was slightly warmer in town than out in rural areas.

Thanks for the temperature listing! It helps paint the picture of how hardy the tree is. Maybe breaking above freezing each day helped give Super Changsha some relief. Like being able to get it’s head above the surface of water to take a breath during a week-long swim in a frozen lake.
