Thai eggplant id
« on: May 08, 2019, 07:21:00 AM »
Hi,
here some confusing eggplants from Thailand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adfzAIyta5E

My questions (internet just cunfused me more):

- The pea eggplant (Solanum torvum?) is very different from the one eaten in Java. Are they two separate species?

-The green eggplant (S. virginianum?) Is smaller than the S. virginianum i know, tastes differently and has no green stripes. Could it be a hybrid with pea eggplant?

-Could the purple eggplant be a hybrid between udumalped eggplant and pea or thai eggplant?

All the other eggplants i mentioned are here (if i id them right):

I grow many egg plants of Thai origin, so many that nobody eats including those in the video.
YES :The pea eggplant (Solanum torvum?)
NO: The green eggplant (S. virginianum?) they are Solanum melongena, actually they originate in SE Asia, so they are they precursors of the modern eggplant. Some F1 hybrids are very vigorous, fast growing and disease resistant.
If you need seeds to grow PM, but it's quite late now for your climate.

This needs to be discussed in the annual vegetable section. Thank you.

☺️No, thank you, im not growing them currently. Just fascinated with them since most of us in the west use only one eggplant variety.

They grow these types commercially here in the Coachella Valley in addition to the Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and of course the American eggplant.

Here is a post of mine growing them. Being small you need more plants so more resources. This is why the big purple egg plants are grown in Europe, high productivity.
They are eaten raw or used in soups or curry. Crunchy and with flavour.

Well, they do taste quite differently so i think they are really worth the additional effort.  ;)

And since then nothing. Just the normal big watery stuff.

I have come to love eggplant more and more. The taste is partly varietal but is strongly influenced by growing condition and ripeness.
They always bet more bitter with age and unless you enjoy that are better young.
The small fruited types usually bear in clusters compared to the larger fruited types. Very reliable and productive is Ping Tung, a long variety. Some of the Japanese varieties are extremely productive when grown well.
The Indian varieties are very tasty to me. If you haven't tried eggplant baked cut in half lengthwise brush with oil and seasoned salt then slow bake.
