disinfecting grafts
« on: February 14, 2015, 01:57:21 PM »
Wondering what solutions have worked best in disinfection of scion & root stock with out causing damage?
I have used 3% hydrogen peroxide but have little confidence in it.
Thanks

I don't use any disinfectant on my citrus, mango and avocado grafts.  I just make sure that the surface of the scion is dry before wrapping it so it won't start growing fungus.

Have found a ref using 70% alcohol on tools but wonder what would do if used on plant material?

I have dome 1000's of grafts, find no need to "disinfect" Some times a wipe with a moist paper tower may help if there is dust on the material. I do clean my blade periodically with alcohol.

Quaternary compound such as DDAC or BAC. Will be an other option. More potent than H2O2, but more safe than Clorox. Use combination of BAC soak 10 minutes then H202 10 minutes, will be more nice than clorox 10 minutes.
I usually cut the scion , sterilizing, then cut diagonal the scion with sterilizing tools.

What about scions with surface mold? Disinfect or just graft it?
