Tropical Fruit Discussion / Digging up inground trees
« on: February 07, 2020, 03:44:41 PM »
I’m wondering if anyone has experience with digging up garcinias to move to a different location. I have 2 Luc’s about 3’ tall and growing well but there is a strong possibility I may be moving in 12 months and I would like to take them if there’s a reasonable chance of survival.
I have a few jaboticabas as well about the same size which i am hoping will be somewhat easier

Must admit I am somewhat surprised to see this Cambuca slowly establishing itself on one branch of a mature Sabara.

First time I have tried a double stone graft (Simon you have inspired me to try this) showing signs of life after 1.5 weeks. The scion is from a seedling Sweet Tart (cheers MR) so hopefully we’ll see how it shapes up down under.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone can confirm that Baileys Marvel and Ugly Betty mango seeds are generally mono?

I keep my guavas at 3-4’ tall, don’t fertilise much, throw a net with a zip sewn in over the tree after fruit set. I cannot get through all the fruit these little trees produce

I grafted some Luc’s wood onto one of my achacha’s, after 6 months or so it has decided to flower

Thanks for the response Seawalnut, my situation is a little different in that the particular tree/s I want to keep warm are in a community garden. So unfortunately a fire for me is s no go, so i was hoping for ideas using something quite passive and safe to add just a couple of degrees inside the clear cover i will make.

I’m interested to know if anyone here has tried using heat generated from a composting heap to keep cold sensitive plants warm through winter? I had some large piles of wood chip that were too hot to keep your hand in when approaching the centre, which got me to thinking this might be a cheap, relatively safe, longish term source of heat. I’m sure others have tried and hopefully refined this idea.

Sent a message, but no response yet, I’m interested, just joined Telegram. Where do i go from here?

Perhaps i’m A lucky guy, my J33 seedling Jackfruit put out some flowers at 2 years and still in the pot

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Canistel experiment
« on: August 11, 2019, 07:10:31 AM »
First report on my Canistel experiment.

I grew 2 seedlings from a friends fruit planted about 3 years ago. Fruit were small sweet and moist but i read canistel is not true to type. I planted both in the one hole and about 2 years ago grafted wood from mature ‘Lyndall’ tree.

More recently ( 4-5 months ago) I grafted some of the branches with 2 other varieties, tipped the seedling leader at 1.5m leaving only 2 branches of the original seedling.
Both the ‘Lyndall’ and seedling tree are similar size (though quite different shape)  but what has surprised me is it is the seedling that is flowering first not the grafted tree.
There is plenty more to go in this experiment, not least of which will be the quality of this fruit if any set.

Much appreciated Simon! Yeah still a few more cool nights to come Down Under, maybe down around 40 F so I will leave it for now.

I have a young Erdon Lee lychee, maybe 3’ tall which is flowering all over. Any suggestions as to how best to manage this? I want the tree to put its energy into growing, perhaps let it set fruit then pick off?

Cheers Sleepdoc, I reckon mine must be a chance next season. I have also grafted a couple of Luc’s scions from a tree that has produced its first fruit onto my Achacha, will be interesting to watch how this develops

Hey Sleepdoc how tall, thick is the trunk on your tree?. I have one that must be getting close, I have topped it at about 8’ so can’t tell how tall it would be but is about 4” thick at base

43
I have a small beetle that helps out for me, but hand pollinating certainly increases production though especially in the fringe months

44
Yeah Rob, I refrigerate my pollen, usually only lasts a day for me. Sometimes it is not long enough but often it is, I have 40+ fruits due to start ripening in a few weeks, at first I was worried I had over done it, but as it turns out the tree is handling it well. Best of luck

Rob you write in the past tense, what happened to your tree. I have one similar age to your espaliered tree which is now holding about 35 fruits. Not sure what i’ll do with them all.

46
These are from a mature cutting that originally came from seed directly from Ecuador. At the risk of getting something incorrect (hate speaking for someone else) i believe Steve sampled the fruit and described it as very sweet, tasted like lemonade. This is probably as close as we can expect to get here in Aus, Hope this helps

47
Yes I believe I have a couple, still too small to fruit yet though. Get in touch with Stevo (Steve T) on this forum he may have some

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Multi-grafted Jaboticabas
« on: February 19, 2019, 02:34:40 PM »
Thanks for your response Simon! I have a Sabara with 2 rootstocks, still only small but growing about twice as fast as single.
Still early days for me, oldest grafts a bit over a year old, most much more recent and so far i’m finding grafts onto Grimal are advancing way faster than grafts on Sabara. It will be interesting to watch their progress!

Hi all, I have recently grafted a bunch of Jaboticabas (about 10 varieties) onto 5 different rootstocks and am interested to hear others experience of how multi-grafted trees go in the medium to long term.

Thanks Orkine, I had read that thread in the past and must admit found it as confusing on my second read. I can’t imagine i’m The first to try, but will report back if I have any success
