Title: Am I The Only One With Dormant Mango Trees??
Post by: Carbo on February 08, 2019, 08:22:55 AM
Here it is, February 8th, and not a single pannicle in sight.  :-\  My Cogshall has not even one swollen bud.  It hasn't been doing well for awhile and I'm thinking of pulling it and replacing with another tree.  Sweet Tart, maybe?
My Pickering, third year in the ground, has a few swollen buds, but that's it.  Last year it started to bloom in early January and ultimately had 100% bloom.  Only about 6 feet tall it held about 3 dozen delicious mangoes.  Are these cultivars alternate season bearers?  Am I doomed to Costco mangoes this summer??   :'(

Naw, I have a single in-ground Graham and potted Rapoza that have pannicles. The cotton candy, sweet tart, lemon-something, mahachanok, and several others I cant think of both in ground and in pots haven't done anything yet. All look healthy though aside from some weevil damage which reminds me I need to hit them up with a systemic since this less than cold winter probably didn't dent the weevil population and they will be back in force soon :(

I just left Zills and they do not have very many trees in bloom. Also the other fruit seller by 95 and Hypoluxo has only a few trees in bloom. I find this odd as I’m in Indian River County and we have full bloom on everything but newly purchased trees.

Because your trees were exposed to significantly cooler weather. The tri-county area hasn’t experienced as many nights in the 50s.

That is part of it but it’s not as simplistic as that, plant hormones, water and other synergistic interactions both known and unknown are involved in plant flowering. My neighbor has 40 or so trees only one is in bloom. There is also a 17 acre grove nearby without any bloom.

Cultivar and relative health and age of stems matter as well. But cool/dry weather is what stimulates floral response in mango.

Yah, mango bloom here is all about cold. You can juice the trees up bio-whatever, but if the climatic factors are not on target, you're not getting mangoes. The subtropical growing region seems to be shifting north at a reasonably rapid pace.

That last cold snap was enough to kick my mangoes into high gear. Nearly everything is going into 50% or greater bloom; lots with what appear to be a full bloom.

Even my two lychees are putting on the flowers. Fortunately, they were in a growth spurt

This is looking to be a great mango year for my area at least.

Or maybe I just happened to get a few degrees colder than you? I am a few miles north.

0-0-50 would lack some vital nutrients. I think 0-0-50 might be well suited to Redlands soil, but not necessarily to the rest of Florida. Nutrient balance is probably more important than raw quantity.

I am in Hollywood, and was worried until past few days, everything has expoloded. Biggest blooms ever. Pickering, Fairchild, PPK, CC, and Honey kiss all in bloom. The cold may have helped but I also hit them for first time with Hars love powder late fall.

I'm seeing blossoms on Mahachanok now.  Angie and Pickering have had some, but not the entire tree at one time as in years past.  Still waiting for Honey Kiss and Providence.

My Manilita is usually first to bloom in December or January. It is just starting to bloom now. Pickering is in full bloom, others still dormant. Hoping this will be the first year I get blooms on the Angie that I top worked to Maha Chanok. Seeing some bud swell - hoping it is blooms:)

My Cogshall, about feet tall and probably 8 years in ground has all of one pannicle.  I think it's getting the axe this summer, to be replaced by. . .??  I'm thinking a Sweet Tart.
The Pickering is beginning to show signs of life.  A few pannicles just pushing and many swollen buds.  I'm just surprised it's about 5 or 6 weeks later than last season.

Just about everything large enough to flower has already flowered or has panicles pushing. I would grade this as a “good, not great” bloom (75-90% bloom, with a great bloom being 90+%). With the mild/warm “winters” we get now in southeast Florida, I’m just grateful for a “good” bloom.

Some exceptions are:

Sweet tart - by far the most disappointing. Out of several dozen ST trees, only a couple have any flowers at all. Absolutely pathetic. I’m convinced this one needs regularly cool winters to flower and produce on a consistent basis because of the energy drained by its larger crops.

Bombay - some panicles but vast majority of a “large” tree is dormant.

Shindri - 2nd year it’s been large enough to flower and still nothing

Naomi - no flowers. has never fruited

Sonpari - completely dormant, had large crop last year

Alphonso - just a small amount of bloom. Not surprised

Jehangir - similar to Alphonso

Shamsul Asamar- insuspect this one needs a pretty cold winter to do anything

J.B 2 - completely dormant. Has never flowered

“Sia Siam” (fake maha chanoks) - 6 out of 7 are dormant

ValCarrie - usually flowers well but not much of anything on two trees
Probably forgetting a few other disappointments.

Some other trees have significant blooms, but subpar by their own standards.

Squam, have your Sweet Tarts been consistently poor producers?  I ask because as I wrote just above, my Cogshall has tested my patience with poor production and jelly seed.  I was thinking the Sweet Tart would be a good replacement.

They had a ‘decent yet disappointing’ crop last year if that makes any sense. A good number of them still failed to flower but We at least got nice crops off a number of them.

I think it’s probably better suited for interior areas, the west coast of Florida, central Florida (brevard, Orlando, etc) and California. Even Gary Zill’s sweet tarts (the “oldest” sweet tart trees in existence) don’t consistently flower well in West Boynton. I also recall Cookiemonster stayed last year that sweet tart had been something of an alternate bearer for him.

I have higher hopes for Cecilove, which tastes quite similar and seems more precocious and easier to flower.

Yah, my ST seem to tend towards alternate year bearing. Last year, one of my trees set so much fruit that two large branches snapped off, wiping out a good 100 or so mangoes. The other problem with such huge crops is that the mangoes are mostly small. This year it has a sparse bloom.

My other ST, though, seems to set smallish crops every year (it's in the very rich / high organic profile, while the other is in deep west palm beach county sand).

Overall, I'm really happy with this year's flowering (and so far with the fruit set as well). Would say I'm in the 75%+ bloom category as well.

My ST is 2nd year in ground and bought as 7 gallon.  I see what could be 1 tiny pannicle.  Meanwhile this is the 2nd year my Pickering is flowering and also bought as a 7g and put in ground see year.  I have a Venus that went in same year as other 2 and bought as a 3g that is flowering profusely.  But ST is my fav mango so I'm willing to be patient.  Pics of Venus below.

You might need to drive to the east coast to get it. Pretty sure Truly Tropical in Boynton Beach carries it. It's a 0-3-16 formulation with minors and slow release K, was specially formulated for our area by Har (Guanabanus)

My sweet tart blooms like crazy here.  Maybe it does like the shock of a colder winter, because mine is less than 6 feet and fruited last year as well and is currently covered in more panicles than the rest of mine. Nothing from my fairchild yet this year....

All but my sweet tart and cotton candy show new signs of spring. Rapoza and my in ground beat up(deer and last winter) Graham are covered in panicles and new leaves. I sprayed the foliar boron and manganese spray on the visible panicles and will spray again when the others pop. Since I am here(was deployed last spring/summer/fall) I am hoping for some mangoes to munch on this time around.

Now Angie, Pickering, and Maha Chanok are all abloom.  Honey Kiss has blossoms, too.  Don't know what Providence will do.  Could be a great summer for mangos!  I wish a bunch of us could get together and swap and taste mangos.  Maybe I'll try to stage an event at my house, come July.  Anyone interested?  (Us poor folk, who can't afford the high price of premium mangos from local commercial sources!)

My Cogshall has always been a spotty producer, with one or two good seasons mixed in.  The Pickering was transplanted from a 3 gal pot.  This is the third year in ground.  Gave me about 3 dozen fruits last season.  I was looking forward to even more this summer.  :(

The dirt?  Could be, but last season the Pickering bloomed 100%; the Cogshall about 80%.  After harvesting all the fruit, I fed both trees with 8-3-9 Plus minors in July and September, then with 0-0-50 in October.  Nothing since.

OK, and the pickering is still a little on the juvenile side. Mine also skipped a year on it's second year in ground. But it seems like cogshall should have bloomed a lot more. Maybe no more nitro for him. Might want to switch over to 0-3-16 3x per year.

I did prune some long lanky branches late last spring so they would branch out. I figured it was too late to expect flowers on those branches this year. But I didn't do this for every branch. Most likely not even close to half of the tree, more like a quarter of the tree.... So I expected to get fruit from the non pruned branches. Guess not? It has always reliably given me fruit so I am surprised.

Don't feel bad I think most everyone here in CA has dormant or very slow growing mango trees at the moment due to all the cold and rain.

We will finally be getting into the mid to high 70's this weekend in San Diego so i'm hopefully to start seeing some flushing....and/or flowering.

Glenn didn't fruit for me. First year in like a decade it hasn't.

Ours flowered in January but flushed a lot of growth simultaneously. Then had a light second bloom. Gonna be a “disappointing” crop by its standards. The Dupuis Saigon trees did the exact same thing strangely enough.

If it hasn't blossomed by now (Providence), can we say no fruit for 2019?

Our largest Providence had a full bloom, but we have another which has produced before including last year that hardly flowered.

I think what you’re seeing here with these various reports of failed bloom is the statistical consequence of the mild/almost-non-existent winter. Lots of trees flowering, but a good size minority chunk with little or nothing.

My biggest disappointment this year (aside from dozens of non-blooming Sweet Tarts  >:( )is Bombay, which is a huge tree compared to others planted at same time, capable of a crop of 300+ pounds, but which barely flowers and will end up with wellunder 50 pounds of fruit :(

So since it does not look like I am going to get any mangos from my Haden tree is it alright to do some pruning now so I am more likely to get fruit next year, instead of waiting until later to prune? I want to clear out some extra branches to open it up more and also want to cut the rest of the lanky branches so it branches out. Or should I wait a month or so?

Glen light crop, bombay very light crop 50lbs or less has not flushed in major part of the tree and I think it is getting to late for flowers on bombay But white pairi has very good set.A few trees early bloom had 90+ % male flowers ,subsequent blooms much better ratio female flowers

My 15 gallon Glenn is in full bloom, but I am going to lose the flowers as I will be up-potting it in an open bottom rootbuilder II pot later today.

Not a great mango season for me. Even some of the trees that flowered did not set fruit.  A number did not even flower at all.

I am interested in the answer to the question asked by Chad6159, since the tree is not flowering or in my case all the flowers have fallen off, is this a good time to prune and tip in preparation for next year?  I may get a couple of flushes, maybe more, over the spring and summer.

Any suggestion?

Finally seeing some life from my Cotton Candy(flush) and Pickering(green knobs). My Sweet tart looks like a healthy bush but still has no flush or blooms.

Looks like my Glenn, Palmer, Kiett and Young/Tebow are taking a year off, first time blooms for me are Phoenix, Gary, Kent, Harvest Moon and Maha Chanok.
The weather is going to cool S.Fl for a few days around March 20, fingers crossed.

Yes, if you're sure the tree isn't going to produce any blooms this year it should be fine to prune now...place a little bit of slow release fertilizer (water in) from time and time and you should see some new growths in a few weeks, Good luck!

The Pickering has exploded with fruit.  The Glenn is coming along nicely as well.  The Sweet Tart has flushed new leaves and fruit are just beginning to show.  Looks like another great mango season in good old S Fla!!!

Got zero blooms off of my coconut cream, Angie, and Keitt - first time ever. Everything else was half bloom (even my Glen, which has never disappointed ... until now). Gonna be buying some mangos this year to feed the habit...
