magic fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) dying
« on: November 18, 2020, 05:08:10 PM »
hi everyone!
i got this one when it was really small and it seems to be growing fine
but lately it seems really bad...
first i thought it's over salt in the ground so i did a "wash" to it's soil with mineral water....
i water it only with mineral water...
i thought that maybe its too cold for him outside now (about 60 fahrenheit at nights)
i brought it inside to a sunny window and warm inside... anything to help the poor thing?
would it be better inside?

Well, my first thought is that it may be the water you are using. Can you explain what you mean by "mineral water"? Do you mean a water that is high in dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium? Or do you just mean "spring water", which may or may not have a lot of minerals.
Miracle Fruit likes very acidic soil, and many mineral waters can have a high pH.
When the soil pH is too high for them, they can't utilize iron, so maybe try a soil acidifier like sulfur.

Also, it may be that you are overwatering. Yellow leaves and brown tips can be a sign of overwatering (or underwatering, or too much fertilizer...).

60 degrees outside shouldn't hurt it.

Because I have a mature one of these plants, I have grown a LOT of them from seed, and sometimes they just crash and don't recover, and I never know what did it.

Maybe other folks have some other ideas.

Good luck!

I keep mine in greenhouse at 10C they do fine with low temperatures when they are constant.
What they don't like it's change in temperature like from 10C to 25C inside a house.
High humidity plays a crucial role that's why leaves are dying. Of course rain water or distilled water is important and soil pH.
In case you used mineral water from shops that kills the plant fast!

Needs acidic soil, such as soil for growing Azaleas or Blueberries.

Needs plenty of Manganese, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, etc,, and chelated Calcium or gypsum.

Needs partial shade, until two or three feet high.

thanks... i took it back outside to a mini greenhouse i built for it...
hope it will get better...
it is possible it has been over watered latly becuase i tried to help the salty ground situation...
i use spring water from local store and maybe should use rain water instead :(
how should i get his calcium and mangezium etc high without hurting it with too much of salts?

Looks veiny and chlorotic.. I’d mix up a low strength solution of (water soluble aka fast release) miracle grow with rain or distilled water (any low ppm water at least for the time being). That will have all the appropriate minerals in sufficient quantity you need to recover. Do not over fertilize
