Wanted: King White Pakistan (Shahtoot) Mulberry
« on: April 23, 2016, 09:28:06 PM »
My wife really wants one of these. They taste like sugar (a lot of sugar) mixed with water. Probably a little simple for my taste, but my wife will not stop talking about it until I can find her one. There is a tree at the spice park, but they don't root (easily) from cuttings, and I don't have rootsock right now for grafting. Anybody know where I can find one here in Broward or Palm Beach? Does excalibur propagate them?

Excalibur has them; they call it the White Mulberry. Also called Australian, I think. I got one, but gave it away to a friend because I got to taste the Himalayan red mulberry and liked it much more. The white is plain sweet. The Himalayan Red is much more than plain sweetness. I got one from Mike Bender last year but it unfortunately died. I got another one from Mike (treesnmore) and got to taste the fruit from his tree too. Awesome. Have you tried the himalayan red? The fruit is as big as the white one..

If Excalibur doesn't have them I know I've got one or two Auatralian mukberry grafted and plan on grafting another 20 or so once the fruit on mine now ripens. I'll be heading to Excalibur one of these weekends if you wanted to meet up there. PM me if you want to work out a trade or something.

I agree that the Himalayan is way better, but the darn birds get to mine the second they start turning red, whereas they aren't hip to the Australian due to the color difference.

Excalibur has a grafted green Mulberry which i believe is the Australian.   They also sell a white but i dont know what variety it is.  Sheehan may be able to add some insight.

Thanks for the help, guys. It looks like I'll be heading up to Excalibur to buy one next weekend (or Monday if my wife has her way :-).

What mangokothiyan describes sounds like the my wife wants.

Dom, is yours long (3 or so inches), skinny, pure white, and sugar sweet (with zero acidity)? Weird that they would call it australian, but I did see that several aussie nurseries carry them.

I've had the himalayan and think it's delicious. I also really enjoy the tice. However, I didn't realize we had space for a mulberry until my wife decided she needed the white one... :-).

That sounds about right cookie monster. I got mine from Fruitscapes over here labeled as "Australian."

Jeff - Excalibur's "green" mulberry looks like Dominic's  and tastes similar to a honey sweet honeydew melon with no acidity.  It ripens to an off white color.  If you go in the next week, there should be some ripe on the trees to taste.

This year my King white shatoot has produced the best crop ever. I am getting 2+ bowls every two days.
When I eat them fresh I can't decide if I like them or not. But I read on Just Fruits website about dehydrating them. WOW are they good! Everyone I have given to try, loves them too. I haven't put my dehydrator away in 2 weeks.

so ive traded with 2 people in Fla that gave me cuttings so far
and they just produced fruit. They are a little mor tart and sweet than the fruit on my large (wild) red.
but a little smaller also.
I have an everbearing i got online for like $6 i think
i believe it was labeled Morus Nigra, but, no telling if that is correct.
I think there are several crosses out there which are mis-labeled.

I also just bought   a Pakistani (from Burt Ridge) , which is about 3ft tall now
it is grafted, so im guessing its a real cultivar.

I received scions this spring labeled as "white pakistani". The graft now has one and exactly one fruit, I am patiently waiting for it to ripen after reading the positive reviews (I like my fruits SWEET).

Side note: the other graft (white?) is clearly dominating the whole tree with incredible vegetative growth and 7-8 fruits. They surely grow fast.

Looking for scionwoods: loquat, cherimoya, jujube, chocolate perssimon

Yeah, they're fast. Mulberry is maybe the one plant where you might want to monitor for grafting tape girdling. It's still not too late if the tie makes a slight notch. You'll want to remove the tape if it's very noticeable though.

Rob,
yes the white mulberries are ripe right now at Excalibur. I ate a bunch last week. There are 2 big trees with lots of fruit across from the longans just past the black mulberry branch blocking part of the road. The cecropia right across from them should also have some ripe fruit on it too.

Got my mulberry, and a few other trees hitched a ride back home... :-). If no one else has it, chances are Excalibur will.

I have the Excalibur "Australian" Green/White.  Its been in the ground 2-3 years and has a nice shape and size. This year it has been an amazing producer of tasty mulberries.  Its a bonus that the birds ignore them - More for me :)

For me, the best tasting mulberry is Himalayan Red; by some distance.
