Tropical Fruit Discussion / how long does it take Lucuma to fruit
« on: July 31, 2018, 05:06:39 AM »
I have two Lucuma trees that are about 4 years old. I am growing them in containers because it gets cold some nights where I live.
One of my plants has strong apical dominance and has never produced any side branches but now it has two branches very near the shoot apical meristem. It could just be hormones but I was wondering if it could possibly be fruit?
My other tree has always had side branches and very weak apical dominance. I am assuming both plants are at the extremes of what is normal for this species but I haven't grown enough plants to be certain. I had a few others that I gave away and one of them had some degree of branching but not as much.
I know it's not ideal where I am growing these plants because Florida is hot, humid, and has a lot of precipitation unlike Peru where this species is native to. I keep them out of the open to avoid over-watering.
They seem to not mind drying out but I wouldn't call them xerophytes. They are more like drought tolerant mesophytes.
I've noticed before what looks like fungus on the stem but they seem to be ok now.
I am not sure when to expect fruits. I bought the seeds from fruitlovers.
