Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unhardening off
« on: January 04, 2022, 10:32:17 PM »
I had to move my tropicals into the garage because of the cold front this week. How long does it take before plants typically lose their sunlight resistance and need to be hardened off before going back outside?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating ilama seeds
« on: September 15, 2021, 02:34:47 PM »
Got some ilama seeds. Was wondering about recommendations on how to germinate them, since I seem to have been unsuccessful germinating sugar apple seeds in the past. Usually favor coir-based mix, I've been using "Koko Bop" from Fox Farms with generally pretty good results for most of my tropicals/subtropicals, but it didn't seem to work in this case.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sourcing Luc's Garcinia
« on: July 11, 2021, 01:04:41 AM »
I had a seedling Luc's Garcinia which unfortunately got waterlogged by my wife and succumbed to root rot, would like to replace it. I would love the opportunity to try to grow from seed if possible. Does anyone know anyone reputable that has seeds or fruit for sale?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Olive tree cultivar selection
« on: October 06, 2020, 04:44:44 AM »
Hello all,
I live in the Rio Grande Valley, zone 9b in south Texas. Temperatures are usually high from April to September, usually in the 90s. Low chill hours and very rare freezes. Pretty dry overall. I'm thinking of trying to grow olives. I've read some conflicting stuff about chill hours in olives. Has anyone gotten fruit from olive trees in this type of climate, and if so, what cultivars would be recommended?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yellow spots on mango leaves
« on: December 01, 2018, 06:39:13 PM »
Hi all,
Just received a plant from Top Tropicals, the plant looks very nice and hearty but I noticed a few spots on the leaves today. Something to be concerned about? Anything to do about it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carrie mango tree help! SOS
« on: November 10, 2018, 06:41:00 PM »

Hi all,
I recently purchased a number of mangoes from Top Tropicals, they did a very nice job of packing them and they all looked very good on arrival, pretty much are all looking good at this point as well, except for one - the Carrie! The leaves are all turning crinkly and dead feeling, and the stem also seems to be getting wrinkled. It was treated the same as the others and so I'm not sure why this one is looking so bad. Any suggestions? I am in zone 9b in South Texas, we are getting a bit of a cold snap currently, but this started happening before it even got cold, and it has not yet gone below 50 degrees F. All of the mangoes I have except 2 that are in the ground are currently huddling up in the garage with a space heater.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another mango in container question(s)
« on: October 27, 2018, 02:09:04 AM »
Hi all,
I am just getting started with mangoes. I live in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, zone 9b, previously planted a NDM and a Coconut Cream in the ground and just got a whole bunch of new varieties- Peach Cobbler, Sweet Tart, Pineapple Pleasure, Pina Colada, Carrie, Cac, Fruit Punch based off recommendations on this site. The issue is my house doesn’t have a lot of property and also the soil is pretty bad, very heavy clay, apparently some years ago before the 1980s) may have been a landfill as well. The coconut cream seems to be growing pretty well but the NDM hasn’t put out a ton of growth. So I was considering growing the new ones that I got in containers instead. Does that sound like a reasonable plan? I was thinking of going from 3g to 7g and 7g to 25g.

Last bonus question in case anyone has an opinion: was thinking of getting one more Zill variety, which would you recommend amongst them (Dot, Spirit of 76, Gary, Zill, etc)?

Thanks very much!
