Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question on mango tree grafting
« on: December 29, 2019, 02:16:35 AM »
Now that you mentioned it, the side cleft graft look different from the side veneer graft. I tried the side veneer graft today, but I did not start from the top of the scion, I used a 6 inch scion and cut out  2 inch from the bottom and notched the back end. When I attached it to the tree branch, I accidently broke the bark flap off, so the notch end was visible. I taped it all up anyway, I think my white pirie tree is getting mad.

Thanks, I have been practicing grafting, so far only the top cleft graft has been working for me. I was just wondering what would happen.

I was watching chris on you tube do a Side veneer graft.. She cuts a wedge on the scion, this does not make sense to me, anyway I tried it and it failed. I will try slicing just one side of the scion on my next attempt.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on mango tree grafting

If I graft a white pirie mango scion onto a dwarf  Julie mango tree branch, will the white pirie branch be less vigorous than a branch on a regular pirie tree?

Awesome fruit, I would like to see the tree and the pot its growing in. It will give something to look forward too. I just started growing mango in a container this year. What type of potting mix did you use and how often did you fertilize the container grown trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How big does a Golden Glow mango tree grow?
« on: September 22, 2019, 02:27:32 PM »
I just planted a Golden Glow mango tree in my small back yard and was wondering if anyone know how big it grows. On "Plant it Hawaii" they say its a medium size tree? To me that means 15 feet, not sure.

Hello, I just ordered a 7 gallon orange sherbert from TT the plant was 107 and the shipping was 135. They still have one 7 gal left. At least these Fed ex shipment comes packed in soil with the root ball in tack. I kind of hate bare root shipped trees. I live on Oahu and have a small yard. I hope those orange sherbert trees are semi dwarf like a Carrie or Nam Doc Mai #4.

Regular soil doesn't drain well in pots. One part peat moss, one part compost, and one part small lava rock or perlite works for me.

I bought a dwarf fiberless haden from a local farmer on Oahu, he said its something new. Its been grafted onto a half inch root stock and the newly grafted tree is about 10 inches. He told me it will grow to 10 feet, but I will still need to prune it.

The best mango's I've tasted in Hawaii are Pirie mango's and we can only get it from some ones back yard, they don't sell it at super markets. The super markets only sell bland local fibrous mango's, and green ataulfo or champagne mangos from Mexico. That's why I started ordering different bare root mango trees from Florida. I am going to stop buying after coco nut cream.

Hello, I am new to bare root shipped mango trees and I have a question. The alphonso mango tree roots were packed in peat moss, but the peat was dry when I recieved it. The tree looked dried out, so I soaked it in water over night and the next day, I put it in a container with 50/50 small lava rock and top soil from Lowes ( Gardeners: sandy loam, composted manure, recycled forest products). I trust the top soil, because I threw some red onion seeds on it and it grew with out burning. Anyway, three days latter, all the leaves from the alphonso mango tree fell off. Then 2 weeks later, I see buds developing on the tips of the branches.

My question is, should I put it in my green house to receive filtered sun before the buds turn into new leaf growth or should I leave it in the shade?

Hello, can anyone tell me if the Butter Cream mango trees are semi dwarf or giant growing trees? I can't find any info on tree size.

I also read about the Indian double graft to dwarf a mango tree on one of the treads on this forum. It seems similar to grafting the same tree onto itself.

I read an article online about how to dwarf a mango tree. A root stock was cut by the base and the top part was bark grafted to it. The tree turned into a dwarf. http://www.filentrep.com/agri-business/how-to-make-a-dwarf-mango-tree.htm

What would happen to a large growth mango tree variety on a compatible root stock if the same mango tree variety were to be grafted above the large growth mango tree's graft to replace it? Would this be considered a double graft to dwarf a large tree?
