Zills top tier Mango Sugar Loaf
« on: November 16, 2018, 03:24:11 PM »
This was our favorite Mango this season.  Thankfully we procured 16 trees for planting out in our grove today.  I guess they plan on this selling out quickly once it’s released.

Didn't realize it was out yet.
It was one of my favorites this year. Only had one though

You picked out an excellent variety to plant out 16 trees of. I wish you a bountiful harvest once your trees are established. Please keep us updated on your trees, I’m sure there are a lot of people on this forum that is interested in the growth rate/habit of this variety.

I wonder if it's bacterial black spot resistant
The disease is going to cover the whole area and wipe out everything from my experience.. if not resistant

I speculate that it’s going to be resistant based on it being an Edward seedling and observed resistance by Edward progeny (Angie, Harvest Moon, Seacrest, Duncan, and Coconut Cream). However It is also worth noting that these all likely contained genes from the Julian or Philippine lines (Duncan). Sugarloaf’s paternal parent may be Pettigrew (whose own level of resistance is unclear).

But we won’t know for sure until more of the Sugarloaf trees fruit.

I never cared for mangos much but heard a lot about these Zill mangos and bought a lemon zest and a CC since I love citrus and coconut. Had the LZ last year and loved it and can’t wait to try the CC this year. I loved it so much I’m ready to buy another mango tree and have been research much. I’m dwindled it down to this butter cream mango or an orange sherbet. I have heard mixed stories weather the LZ and OS are similar. Do u have a recenondation weathe I should get the OS or butter cream?

That’s easy, Butter Cream is definitely a top tier Mango.

I haven’t had the pleasure to enjoy Buttercream yet. I have tried more than 100 other varieties over the last 8 years or so and...OS makes my top 5.

Butter Cream is a wonderful tasting mango that resembles its name.  The texture and taste are hard to beat...

Just out of my top ten this season with OS a few spots higher

I like the citrus flavored mangos to a fault so your mileage may vary

Sounds like a very promising cultivar! I'd like to get on a budwood wait list for next summer.

Most of our Mangos are pushing flowers even the Sugar Loaf. Though at 1ft tall it might be a bit too small. I was surprised with the efficacy of various drenches these young trees got and even though I could clearly see copper was sprayed at zills, the rhizosphere was soon colonized by arbuscular mychorizal fungi as shown in the photo.

Hello, can anyone tell me if the Butter Cream mango trees are semi dwarf or giant growing trees? I can't find any info on tree size.

any new info on this or the buttercream?

It does have very smooth and soft texture. Melts in your mouth like butter cream. I like the shape, each butter cream mango have it ‘own unique shape. It’s uglier than Ugly Betty. Because of the hint of Indochinese flavor it’s not in my top 10 list. But, I love Zinc, Sweet tart, P22 and the new no name mango even though its dose have significant amount of Indochinese flavor.

This year Sugar Loaf was excellent.  A mix of pineapple and Coconut flavor. Once it’s get over ripe it’s become more flavorful.  Last year Zills picked them way too early and I wasn’t sweet.
Coconut cream is a mix of coconut, citrus and mango flavor. An over ripe Coco cream is garbage.  Once coconut cream mangos perfectly ripe, then you have only 18 hours or less to eat or you have to refrigerate to lock the flavor.
