It died. Probably phytophora. I will plant another this winter and treat the area with a systemic fungicide.

systemics :( 

So many mameys survive without them why not try again without a systemic. Maybe add some trichoderma to the soil instead.

Good idea, I will look into that. But a systemic isn't that bad if I use it for one tree in its first year just once or twice, is it?

Actually. yes...there are no true evIdnce to know for certain how long it stays in the plants system....and as mural stated. many Mayes are grown without a problem and the need to use it.
