Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona spraguei fruiting in Sarasota, Fl
« on: November 05, 2019, 02:11:47 PM »
I got my first fruit yesterday. This is the second fruiting in the USA that I know of. Steve from Fruitscapes on Pine Island was the first a few months back. Both of our trees came from the same seed batch that the late great Ray Jones germinated.

The fruit was mildly sweet and very seedy. It was fully tree ripened and eaten within hours of picking. The flavor was reminiscent of Rollinia. Definitely edible. Nothing objectionable flavor wise. This is an unimproved wild fruit and a collector item. The tree is absolutely gorgeous with giant pubescent leaves.

SOLD OUT

Fresh seeds from a self pollinated grafted Guillermo Ilama.

$2 each seed plus $3.50 shipping. Will ship in vermiculite in a padded envelope with tracking. USA only.

Just finished eating this one. The fruit just before this one was almost two pounds but dropped while I was out of town. Tastes kind of like a berry yogurt. Not over the top sweet like the atemoya or squamosa. I eagerly devoured this entire fruit in minutes.

PM me for my paypal address.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangifera caesia graft compatibility
« on: June 13, 2019, 10:11:58 AM »
Does anyone know what species are graft compatible with Mangifera caesia?

31st annual MRFC tree sale. Over 20 vendors inside the convention center. I'll be there but I will mostly be selling dragonfruit and whatever odds and ends I can dig out. I am pretty sure Adam (Flying Fox) will be there as usual. Lots of other great vendors. Come on out!

I have some more seed available. Fresh fruit picked today and some more on the tree. Message me if you are interested.

Pitomba Eugenia luschnathiana seeds

Just harvested.

$2 per seed. $4 shipping with tracking in a padded envelope.

USA only.

These are really good. They remind me of apricots. I think this is a better strain then some others since I have tasted bad ones and other people have bad taste reports. I have branches from another tree from the same seed batch grafted onto this and they taste the same so they should be similar high quality.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Crystal Guava When to pick?
« on: March 20, 2019, 01:02:05 PM »
The Crystal Seedless scions I got from xshen are starting to fruit. Most of the pictures I can find show somewhat small fruit. I feel like this needs to get a little larger. When is the optimal time to pick? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona pruning concepts
« on: February 25, 2019, 11:22:58 PM »
I love working with Annonas. You can heavy prune in late winter here in Florida just before they pop and really get into detail work combing over every inch and stripping leaves. During the growing season you can prune and strip multiple times and force flowering and extend fruiting season with hand pollination.

Here are some examples of some trees I have worked with and the troubleshooting and rejuvenation I dealt with when the Manatee Rare Fruit Council hired me to maintain the planting at Palma Sola.

Pruned Dream canopy at my good friends Darryl's place sweetsonggroves.com here in Sarasota. I did this a few weeks back and it is starting to push out new growth now.

These are the Lisa and Gefner at Palma Sola. I don't know how much pruning was done in the past but these had some real gnarly scaffolding architecture.

Lisa a little over a year ago. Planted for years without proper training.

After corrective pruning. This really scared some of the club members. hahaha

Lisa after this year. A little bit of shaping during the growing season.

Lisa after I pruned a couple a few weeks back.

Gefner a little over a year ago. Planted and left untrained.

Initial reset a little over a year ago.

Gefner after the growing season.

Gefner after pruning about 3 weeks ago.

Right now is a good time to prune and strip all the leaves off here in Florida. This will work with the common Annona species like Atemoya, reticulata, macroprophyllata and squamosa.

Explosive growth on this thing. Not much fertilizer was used and I have pruned it 2 or 3 times. In ground just over a year.

Planted on February 19th 2018

These were taken today. 2/25/2019

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Monster avocado
« on: February 18, 2019, 10:01:14 PM »
I just picked that last two avocados off of a large tree. I believe it is a Choquette but the owner didn't know the cultivar but it is a grafted variety. I didn't realize Choquette hung this long and I really liked the quality of this fruit when I had them in the past.

60 oz!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado ID please

My friend just picked the last of these. The tree was purchased as a Winter Mexican but the few photos I found online don't match. Grown in Sarasota, FL. The tree seems somewhat dwarfish.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Great speaker for rare fruit clubs
« on: February 12, 2019, 10:34:21 AM »
I just had Keith Zimmerman speak at the Manatee Rare Fruit Council last night and he put together a really great presentation on edible palms. I figured I would put this out here since it can be a pain to find new and interesting speakers at times. He is very knowledgable and can field all sorts of questions palm related outside of the presentation as well.

If you are interested shoot him an email.

Highly recommended!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plinia trunciflora first flowering
« on: February 07, 2019, 08:22:01 PM »
Grafted October 2017.

Topworked a non fruiting Sabara.

First flowers showed up on the rootstock and just noticed the trunciflora flowers. Very excited. I haven't tasted these before. I got the scions from Phelipe Castro out in California.

From left to right: Arka Sahan, RH-1, African Pride, Giant Yucatán, Pink’s Mammoth, Big Green

I am getting my first round of fruits from this. This was grafted 1/26/18 but it has apical dominance on an established tree. Annonas tend to be smaller here in Florida. The taste is excellent. Soft/melting and seedy with a delicious cake icing flavor.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona macroprophyllata germination experiment
« on: November 15, 2018, 11:21:04 AM »
Exciting news on my little experiment. I have germination on two groups of treated/untreated Annona macroprophyllata seeds from Luc and Raul after 2 -3 weeks. Half were soaked in 200ppm ga3 and the other half in water. Here is the main trick. The seeds from Luc were stored in a mason jar for about 2 years and the seeds from Raul were stored for over a year. I will try to germinate the rest without ga3 because I believe that negatively effects the plant health. The treated Luc's White germinated and the untreated haven't come up yet.

Kwai Muk is back in season. Fruit are from the same tree as previous years. I love these things.

$12 for 10 seeds shipped in padded envelope with tracking. Additional seeds are $.75 each. USA shipping only.

Seeds will be cleaned and in a ziplock with vermiculite. This fruit is very tasty and should be much more common. It reminds me of citrusy sweet/tart figs. Hardy to mid 20s.

Message me you are interested and I will give you my paypal address. Thanks! - Josh

Har is excellent. Come out if you are in the area.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Excalibur Red grafted trees from Excalibur
« on: October 01, 2018, 01:09:22 PM »
How many people here have fruited their Excalibur Red jackfruit trees that they bought from Excalibur? I have a friend that got their first fruit this year and it wasn't the right tree. The fruit came out light yellow. They bought the tree directly from Excalibur about 4 or 5 years ago.

I have one in the ground but it was purchased from them 2-3 years ago.

Hopefully this was just a fluke and large batches for extended amounts of time weren't mixed up. I am really looking forward to seeing and eating this one in person.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / JF Annona grafting in Florida
« on: May 30, 2018, 02:21:49 PM »
Calostro seems to be doing well here in Sarasota. I try to get out and hand pollinate when I can but this also seems to set readily on its own. Fruits are tasty and it grows well on my Dream rootstock.

This fruit set after the heavy pruning I did for hurricane Irma. I picked it in early May and it still tasted good despite overwintering and hanging on the tree after it was HEAVILY pruned in Spring.

The La Habra Sun is quite prolific and great flavored.

I have some LM-3s hanging now which I am really excited to try

Also, various other stuff has small fruits or flowers. Anona Dulce, Arka Sahan, Birula, Pink's Mammoth, Big Green......

Thanks Frank! It is exciting to try all this stuff.
