A good day at the Fruit & Spice Park...
« on: October 14, 2012, 06:12:40 PM »
Volunteered at the F&S Park today. Check out the display table!

My favorite out of the fruit that I could taste was Yellow Mombin!

Not sure, Richard. I didn't ask, and no one at the event asked about the variety or I would have asked Chris Rollins who was there, as well.

I plant 3 winged beans per banana mat.  The beans need to climb and the banana's productivity isn't significantly affected.

That's no way to talk to an Artocarpus! :)

Incidentially, they think humans are pretty repulsive looking "It's good they cultivate us, but do they really have to be so weird looking?"

I'm kind of shocked that the best taste score was a mombin.  I haven't had that many Spondias but most of the ones in that group taste pretty bad to me.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

Luc, that is labeled simply as autocarpus sp. I am not sure it is lakoosha but its close.

Ggpalms, yes it was at the GrowFest. It wasn't well-attended but I still enjoyed it.

Tabbydan, I'm not that big a fan of hog plums either, but these yellow ones from the park are excellent. Probably an improved variety.

I enjoy volunteering at these events, partly because I get really close to the fruits and because I can take fruit and seeds home!

A. lakoocha is the "most common" artocarpus with that odd shape.

There are others with odd shapes like A. tonkinesis... but I think it's probably lakoocha.

I thought the same thing.

What is that deep red-fleshed fruit with the reddish yellow skin, a third of the way from the bottom on the right side of the second photo?

Those are some excellent pics. Wow!
Whos said there are no fruits in Winter time!
I want those fruit catalogued! ;)
But really, I wish someone would identify all those fruits; right down to what kind of cultivar each one is.
I didn't go because I thought it would suck. Boy was I wrong. Specially with Richard Campbell being there and all. I could kick myself. Godwilling, this is the last one I'll miss.
I hope it wasn't the best one ever; the best has to be just to come, right?
At least we all got something out of your great volunteering. You sure put it to good work! Please keep it up! Nice job! :)

In the first set of pictures, in the second picture, upper right, is that a chupa chupa I see there...?

Mr. Caimito,

I don't quite remember what fruit that was... Pretty sure it wasn't chupa chupa, though as I would have jumped on those seeds!

I'll keep thinking about it though as I'm sure I knew what it was when I was volunteering that day.
