Fertilizing Biriba/Rollinia
« on: February 01, 2017, 11:51:10 AM »
Hello everyone. I have a biriba/rollinia tree in-ground that is probably 9 feet or more. It has what appear to be a few tiny flowers starting to pop out, first time it has flowered. Almost all of the leaves have recently dropped, has to be from the cold spells. Is it a good idea to fertilize now or should I just leave it be? It has been about 3+ months since last fertilization. Thanks!

With my biriba trees it's been normal for them to lose most of their leaves from time to time. I have never fertilized my trees. They seem to have wide reaching root systems to find whatever nutrition they want, I suppose. I even have one very large old tree that is almost completely shaded, and it produces a good number of big wonderful fruit.

Thanks Doug. That makes me feel better about doing nothing, which isn't always easy.

They're semi decidious. Might still be a good idea to give it a shot of fert as i notice with mine that when they drop most of their leaves is when they start to flower and fruit. So that is the time when they need food the most.

Use a high nitrogen fertilizer. If you want to go organic use chicken manure or compost. If you want to go synthetic use ammonium sulfate or urea.
