no it just needs to be cut down and used for charcoal, so the land can be cleared for soy beans or cattle.

LOL.  I love dark sarcasm. That is a good one...as sad as it is.  I also love a good irony.

That hillside definitely looks like it is suffering from erosion and land slides due to land clearing.

OH, i thought you were going to say it should be potted up--would grow better in a pot.  ;)

Here are some pics of my Jaboticaba after last week's rain event.  I have 3 mature ones and a bunch of littlier ones. I have killed more than I have thriving currently.

I just picked up a red jaboticaba that I haven't planted yet that came from BRFC sale and PIN.  Which I understand originated from Adam S.   So thanks Adam for spreading your seed!

We can call you Johnny Jaboticaba-seed (like a modern day Johnny Appleseed).    LOL...

And, here is my recently purchased Red Jaboticaba that is looking for a home in the yard somewhere...

I'm having a hard time finding a full sun spot for it but is going into the ground this afternoon.  How is the drought tolerance for the red?  Thanks for any info.

Also, if I plant it where it can't get regular watering I thought of planting a plant saucer a few feet under the hole to help hold water where the tap root can find and help it get established.

Good or bad idea?

Thanks. I just found a good spot for it.   I am going to plant a saucer under it a few feet to help trap water.

I'm not too worried about getting fruit off it right away.  I'll remove any flowers the first year or thin them out the 2nd year anyway to help the tree get better established first. Looking forward to the red as your comments about how good they were permeated through Eric during his speech last month.

My problem is I only have access to well water or rain.  thus, I trap the rain water as best I can and use it on the acid loving plants that can't tolerate drought and/or new plantings.
Most plants like my well water but it is High PH.  If I use the well water I let it sit in a small pond first and let the salts sink to the bottom and it gets conditioned with oak dropping/mosquito larvae, dead things, etc.

No, I didn't get the grimel but it was tempting. Maybe next year!!! Thanks for the info and growing these plants.

Doesn't gardening and patience go hand in hand?

Is this a good idea or not?   Plastic saucer acting like a hardpan?

Should I go deeper with it?   I'm not worried about flooding as this is white sugar sand with the water table ten feet below.

One of my jabs is a knockout. It has at least 3 massive crops a year and a light crop or two between like the picture taken 15 minutes ago. This is in spite of drying and cooling weather.

Nice photo.  Yes, Jaboticaba are awesome to grow.  The fruit is tasty and the tree is very ornamental.

This morning photos:

'Mango' the great squirrel hunter jack russell guards my newly planted red jaboticaba!   This dog is so obsessed in finding rodents. (which is why I got him in the first place).

Got 3 inches of rain yesterday!  That helps as well...

More mysteries from Brazil? As article points out acerola is from a totally different family than jaboticaba, so don't think acerola grafted onto jaboticaba is possible. Photo wasn't very convincing either! I'm much more likely to believe that passionfruits can form in the shape of male genitalia.

That is impressive flowering for a container grown tree!

I was lurking over on the off-topic dog thread and I see your JR looks similar to my 'mango' JR.  Great dogs!

This is the 2nd flowering for this tree this spring. The first one the whole tree was loaded.   I've got another one that is getting ready to bust-a-move (photos coming when it happens)

I've gotten over 7 inches of rain the past few days. That will help since I hardly ever water these plants.

Sorry for the bad picture but my 2 unfruitful yellow jabs (it is too tropical for them here) are putting the squeeze on a jaboticaba I bought as a large leafed common jaboticaba. It has large brownish fruit woth a little fuzz and the tree is quite open.No doubt it will enjoy its time in the sunshine when the defiant yellows are chopped down.

look like u got a m spirito santensis.

it's a most beautiful tree.  fruits have thick pulp and concord grape like flavor.

doesn't seem to tolerate constantly soaked roots for months, like cauliflora and jaboticaba.

seems to fruit earlier than other common species.

the big bushy tree looks like m. jaboticaba sabarah,(hard to tell from phone pic) the most common type in the world I assume.  it's really tasty and sweet.  leaves are small usually, and fruits are medium sized, with thicker skin than trunciflora and hybrid cauliflora, but not as thick as m. spirito santensis.

cut those suckers off of the base! the are making me twitch with anxiety...I'm going to take a plane trip with my pruners in hand!

This guy is getting ready to bust-a-move.  My jaboticaba are very close to my house.  Thus, not full sun. So, they are probably are not going to fruit as much as it can.  But, as everyone knows, you can't eat all your fruit.  I know when these trees produce there are tons.  I've given some crops away to the BRFC meetings  for 100 people and they all got to sample them.

I really want to get into jaboticaba wine making. Anyone got any easy tips?  I'm so limited with time nowadays that posting on this forum seems like I am cheating all my other chores.  But...who doesn't like to brag about their fruit trees!!!!  LOL

I think the next stage or the graduation process of growing Jaboticaba is getting into Jabo-wine making.

Anyone make fruit wine and have any tips?   I've brewed my own beer before and found it too much work.

Is wine making any easier?

Jaboticaba wine is excellent, but i've yet to try making it. I made jaboticaba liqueur which was excellent++. I did post the recipe in another recipe thread.
CentralFloridaDave, my guess is that the jaboticaba in your photo was not getting enough sunlight and got lanky tring to reach up and over the roof to get some sun.

Thanks. I'll check those wine making threads.

Yes, all my trees are competting for sun light.  Here is a photo from the backporch and the jaboticaba is in the foreground and a HUGE live oak in the background.

I live under a oak canopy.  So, yes, the tree is stretching to find sun light!  It has found a lil' niche' and does get a good dosage of sunlight.

Full sun spots in my yard are at a premium!   Fortunately jaboticaba will fruit in partial shade.
