Eugenia lutescens
« on: September 05, 2016, 08:10:24 AM »
Anyone growing this one at all or know a source for seeds? I know they're meant to be fussy but anybody grown them successfully?  Thanks for any advice.

I got one of these, grows nicely, seems easier to keep happy than some of the more fickle Eugenias/Myrciarias/Plinias....it handles high heat well...mine is about 3y 3ft....I have had to drench a few times to keep it green, but nothing like Myrciaria dubia...or Plinia hybrid Escarlate...those are the worst...I guess pH of 6.5-6 is just too high

Good to know, I thought I was harder to grow. Any lead on a source for seed?
Tomas, if you read this do you still sell seeds of this one?

Yeah I have a few too mike, they have a nice foliage and growth form. Mine aren't the slowest grower, nothing like matossii but still putting some size on. Biggest one is  about 20cm or so. Thought I would add lutescens to the mix if I could track itdown also. Hey mike did you ever id that Eugenia pubescens as correct and do you still have it? Ever fruit it?

I don't know what happened to my last post but I meant I have a couple to lutescens to 25cm as well as pyriformis x lutescens to 1.4m in a number of forms. My matossi would be 1m wide and 60cm high and still hasn't had a flower or fruit.

Hi Don,

I never sell seeds. I give them away when I have extra seeds. I will keep you in mind if I ever get more  Eugenia lutescens seeds.

Thanks fellas. Any photos of them at all?  Would be good to see what they look like cultivated. Everything on the net seems to be from the wild. That is good size on your lutescens pyriformis hybrids mike. Mine are bout 12 months old. What time of year do your lutescens fruit Tomas? Are they a productive little bush or bit sporadic?

Hi Don,

I don't know anyone who has a fruiting Eugenia lutescens outside Brazil. I have had no luck with Eugenia lutescens myself. Each time I have tried they died in less than 6 months. Some people believe in the cerrado curse...

Mine had fruit at 60cm high.It looks like an olive branch which is nothing like the pyriformis x lutescens (they look like pyriformis). The fruit were globular, bright yellow and larger than the ones IO googled. The taste surprised me in much the same way my first sampling of candolleana and E.pitanga did.It was excellent, being better than anticipated with an apricot flavour present and the Eugenia I have ever tried.

Hi Luc, the new book contains Eugenia sellowiana, the name Eugenia lutescens is mentioned as a synonym.
