First sprout of Raul’s Ilama seeds
« on: June 23, 2018, 10:52:13 AM »
One of the white ilama seeds from Raul sprouted, so stoked. Planted around mid August. The one to sprout was soaked in a super boogie brew compost for about a week and planted in ocean forest/happy frog potting soil. I soak them once every week or two for the first couple months then I keep moist for a couple weeks following a dry week, trying to simulate the natural rainy season as far as water needs. Also only used rain water.

Hope this helps.

Awesome.  Mine are hopeless.  First, one sprouted, but then it died out.

I am curious if there's a nursery in Southern California that sells ilama in a 3-7 gal pot.

Too much GA or water will easily kill Ilama seedling.

I killed about 10 seedlings before i got it right.  ::)

Mimosa in LA had Ilama grafted onto Cherimoya last year in 5 gallon pots. I think they were about $90 ea. I haven't been up there this season. Chris

Thanks Chris. My dad went there for some other plants yesterday. I asked him to look for some ilama plants for me, but Mimosa ran out of it. The owner said it's sold out.

A year and three months and the first red ilama sprouted

This is one of the seeds I soaked in compost water for 3 days, so far the seeds soaked in home brewed compost germinated first.

Here are some of Raul’s from the same period. I planted them right away and they are doing well. I had good germination. The drought has been tough on them. I have many more but these are the biggest.

Bob, do you plant the germinated seedling in full sun?

I planted them in one gallon pots in an area that received full sun from 1pm to sunset. They have been in full sun from dawn till dusk after reaching 10” in height. They do not like to be in constantly wet soil and can take a completely dry pot for a few days intermittently. On my farm those planted in ground went without water for six days during our current drought and still pushed new leaves. The reticulatas, glabras, muricatas and squamosas showed signs of  stress. The glabras and muricatas dried up halfway, losing half the plants. The reticulatas had dry leaves that came back after watering. The squamosas had slightly dry leaves.

All sprouted without GA3. I kept the seeds for six months, cracked the shell, soaked for one day and kept them wrapped in moist tissue in ziploc bags at a temp. of 30 0C. About 40% did not sprout, got spoiled.
