What is your favorite New mango variety?
« on: August 05, 2014, 05:28:25 PM »
I have not had mango trees long and I have only tried a few varieties.  The only newer variety that I have tried is Lemon Zest, which I like.  So I thought I would ask which is your favorite?  I have listed some but feel free to add any that I have missed.  I had not heard of any of these until I joined the forum.  Smh...no more shopping at Home Depot.

Lemon Zest, Pineapple Pleasure, Pina Colada, Sweet Tart, Peach Cobbler, Fruit Punch, Providence, Coconut Cream

From everything I've read on this forum from all those who have tried it, Lemon Zest seems to be #1.

Just read an Orange Sherbert review...sounds delicious.  Too bad I will probably never taste it.

My own favorites would be Lemon Zest, Peach Cobbler, and Fruit Punch.

Pineapple pleasure is a bit tart for me, at least some of the time, but others with more experience than I love it.

I have not tasted Orange Sherbet, so for me LZ is in a class of its own.  It is mellow, citrusy lusciousness, very sweet. It doesn't have much tartness for balance, but it just doesn't need it.

But I like Fruit Punch just as much; it has a different sort of greatness.  Hopefully this cultivar will be propagated and sold at some point.

Right now I can't remember a lot about Peach Cobbler, other than its high place in my regard. It is not necessarily a handsome mango, but has lots of flavor.

Sweet Tart is also very very good. On my small tree it bore in clusters, and I should have thinned the fruit.

So it appears I have not helped you narrow things down.    >:(

Sweet Tart is what I like best. But I have only tasted it and LZ a lot. I have tasted other new Zill creations but only slices and samples so they don't register much and blend together. Give me a whole Fruit Punch or CoCo Cream and I would give an opinion

Is Edgar considered a new Zill creation? As new as LZ? I only had one Edgar that was delicious.

Mangomandan - in your opinion is Pineapple Pleasure the most tart? I figured it would be the Sweet Tart.

Zands - have the Sweet Tart been consistent?  Do you ever find it overly tart?

I am not Dan or Zands but...

Pineapple Pleasure is not tart but is sweet with a good level of acidity similar to what is found in a pineapple (hence the name).

Sweet Tart, when fully/properly ripened,  is not tart at all.  It is actually very sweet with a slight subacid tang.  While those who like a fully sweet mango may not like it, most who taste a fully ripened specimen love it.  If picked too early or not fully ripened, it can be chalky and sour.

Between the two, Pineapple Pleasure has a much higher level of acidity.

They are not tart despite the name.
I bought my sweet tart tree three years ago because the name sounded good even though I am not a fan of tart foods. I had never tasted the sweet tart fruit. I figured OK.... For variety why not get a mango with some tartness? Three years later the outcome is a mango with no more tartness than any other I have eaten.

It is so difficult to recommend varieties - you just have to taste them for yourself. For example, the majority of people here really like Pickering ( not Zills, to the best of my knowlege) - I have tasted this mango off my own tree and from at least 3 other sources and I just am not crazy about it. Everyone has different views.

Fruit punch is outstanding and very sweet- it really reminded me of Hawaiian Punch.

LZ does have an orange sherbert taste - I love it but of course, not everyone likes orange sherbert

Providence is a very large mango . It has a traditinal mango taste and its really good as well.

Coconut Cream really does taste a bit coconutty

Maha Chanok is also a "newer variety: - not Zills and it is delicious.

There are also rarer varieties, which are older and should not be discounted. For example, Dupuis Saigon is my absolute favorite mango - it just tastes great.  Ivory is totally different as well- it tastes vanilla.

I think I am gonna have to....agree that a properly ripe Sweet Tart beats most LZ.  The LZ would have to off the wall, perfectly ripe amazing specimen (I have seen a lot of variability in LZ, especially this year, and even moreso OS is highly variable in quality in almost every year).

I was in your position a few years ago.  I tasted  a few varieties and wished to plant trees now.  Around 75 trees/plants later...my advice is to focus on productivity and disease resistance.  Or you may end up with an ornamental mango tree (doesn't bear much fruit) due to disease or productivity issues.

Carrie is disease resistant, productive (this was an off-year), and tastes great if properly ripened.

Carrie actually sucks, does not taste great no matter how its ripeed, IMO.  Sorry, just had to do it (and I did add "IMO" as I know many like and love it...no rights or wrongs there, just opinions).

While I know your issues with Pina Colada, I still wish you would take the advice that your trees are just too young to judge.  Lemon Zest is also disease resistant, from the many I have seen, a heavy bearer when mature.  I cannot speak directly for Pina Colada other than I have seen the number of fruit that have come off mature trees.  As you stated, some varieties will have off years, no matter how mature and that cannot be avoided.

Which one do you guys think is more forgiving if not picked at the ideal time?  I do not want one that goes from ripe to over ripe/mush in a short period of time.

Mr. Clean you must have a lot of space...how many are mangoes?

Rod

Around 30-35 mango trees in ground; with about 20-25 varieties (several duplicates).  My trees are relatively young, but in a few years production will substantially exceed consumption.

My Sweet Tart and Lemon Zest trees are both young, and both fruited for the first time this year. ST is smaller and gave me about 6 mangos. LZ is about 12 feet tall and gave me about 28 fruits.    So, I can't speak to how how hard it is to get a nicely ripened Sweet Tart, as I've had too little experience.

But I've been very happy with LZ. Every fruit has been delicious, so I'll say that LZ is forgiving.  Sometimes I would see the fruit go from pale to warmly yellow in one day, and I'd pick it. Sometimes it fell onto thick weeds/grass just before it got that colorful. Sometimes I picked it when it was just starting to show some color turn. In all cases it was very tasty.      In the couple cases where a bit of clear sap oozed out after picking, I was amazed at how delicious the sap smells.

In another thread Rob explained when to pick LZ to avoid having it fall and get damaged. I'm going to review that post, as I hear that my LZ will not remain a compact tree.

Mangomandan - Did you plant your LZ & ST at the same time?  Just wondering how much faster the LZ grows.  Can you post pics?

I have been able to buy Cogshall & Glenn multiple times so I am getting better with those.  Everything else is a crap shoot.  Mangoes & watermelons are my favorites but both are terrible if not picked/eaten at the ideal time.
