Hello,

I recently received some of your seeds in excellent condition.  The only problem is they are much larger than the Plinia rivularis seeds I've planted in the past (almost 3-4 times as large), and the seeds I planted before are confirmed to be the correct species.

Also, Plinia rivularis is a small fruit, so I'm wondering if you have a picture of the mother tree, or a picture of some fruits to confirm this tree's identity?

thanks!

Ricardo,

thanks for the prompt response, and detailed info.

Please try to get a close up of the leaves, top and bottom, and the new growth if possible.

also the bark on the oldest portions of the tree would be nice!

I was recently comparing some of the seedlings from your supposed P. rivularis, with my confirmed P. rivularis....and I do not believe they are they same species.

the foliage appearance and growth habit is totally different, and  the seeds were much larger than they should have been....3-4 times the size of true P. rivularis seeds.

I hope we can figure out what species this is.

Here's some photos of the seedlings that sprouted from the seeds that it purchased as P. rivularis. These seedlings don't look like P. rivularis to me. Does anyone recognize them?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi ASaffron,

In Brazil, have another Myrtaceae,  with the same common name " Guaburiti" , this specie is " Calyptranthes tricona " see this website of a university from Brazil
http://www.ufrgs.br/fitoecologia/florars/open_sp.php?img=82

Both species have the same common name :
- Plinia rivularis know as  " Guaburiti "
- Calyptranthes tricona know as " Guaburiti "
Sometimes, by reason of both species have the same common name, people think the tricona Calyptranthes is Plinia rivulares
In the pictures of your seedling like a Calyptranthes tricona, see the pictures link of the university,
The fruit is similar too (see the picture in the link of the university , http://www.ufrgs.br/fitoecologia/florars/open_sp.php?img=10023 ), but the fruit of Calyptranthes tricona is smaller and darker,
Calyptranthes tricona the fruit is good, the seed is smaller and have a color green inside of the seed
I have thousands of seeds Calyptranthes tricona,
Who want,  I can send for anyone for free some seeds
I sold seeds of true Plinia rivularis

Ricardo,

Calyptranthes tricona has young stems with hair, and color of rust.

my confirmed P. rivularis, and your mystery seedlings do not exhibit these features.

so C. tricona is out of the question.

Luc, yes this is the true P. rivularis....it looks just like your specimen and mine.

I've seen pics of yours before, posted on the forum.

here is your post Luc...

Here's mine , only surviver , slow grower....

The leaves of Ricardo's seedlings are much too large, as were the seeds themselves.

The Institute of Brazilian Forest, sell seedling of Plinia rivularis, they have picture in close leaves of the seedling,
IS EXACT THE SAME  SEEDLING IN THE PICTURE edself65 was posted

Are the INSTITUTE OF BRAZILIAN FOREST wrong too ?

Yes...based on the information provided by the authors of "Brazilian Fruits and Cultivated Exotics", I believe the Instituto Brasileiro de Florestas is mistaken.

but it does appear that the seeds you sold, are in fact the same plant that they have labeled as P. rivularis.

Also notice, the common name of the plant on the webpage you provided, is "Yellow Guaramirim"
 http://ibflorestas.org.br/loja/mudas/muda-40a60-guaramirim.html

this must be a different species altogether....the common name of the plant I have is, guaburiti or cambucá-peixoto

look below....here is a link to the real P. rivularis...which looks much like a Jabuticabeira, instead of a Eugenia...(your plant resembles a Grumixama, more than a Jaboticaba...although it could be some other form of Plinia)...

Interesting debate. I will try to ask Lorenzi for his opinion. BTW Lorenzi was here visiting just a few days ago. Was nice to finally meet him. He told me a new book of all the tropical fruits of Brazil is planned to come out some time early next year. Will include all the Amazonian fruits that are missing in his last book on Brazilian fruits.
