Tropical Fruit Discussion / How often to water banana plants?
« on: October 27, 2013, 01:48:58 PM »
I've seen some references online that say banana plants like a lot of water, and that they sometimes fail due to lack of consistent watering.

How often do you water your banana plants?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Simmonds avocados - just picked. Normal?
« on: October 18, 2013, 06:30:20 PM »
I have a small Simmons avocado tree which is maybe three or four years old. This is the second year it has produced a handful of avocados. What I found interesting was that the avocados were not full-sized until the beginning of October. Is this normal? Could it be that The season was late this year or perhaps the fruits were not ready until now because of the immaturity of the tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Distances required for cross pollination?
« on: October 15, 2013, 04:00:53 PM »
I have two different emperor lychee trees in my yard.  One is located 50' from other lychee trees and the other is 90 feet from others.

I also have two white sapote trees (suebelle and redlands) which are about 60'' away from each other?

Are these distances too far away for any benefit of cross pollination?  Would cross pollination increase yield significantly for an emperor lychee tree or the white sapotes?

Thanks!

I will be planting out two bangkok lemon seedlings.   They will be from a batch of seeds all taken from the same fruit.  Can two seedlings from the same fruit cross pollinate each other?  Must they be significantly different genetically in order for this to work?

I have a small spot in my yard where I can either plant one Jackfruit Tree and let it go 15 feet wide and 12 feet tall, Or instead I can plant to Jackfruit Trees and let each of them go to feet wide and also 12 feet tall.

In which scenario do you think I will get more fruit?

Thanks

I'm considering planting the following varieties and I'm curious as to their seasons:

Bangkok Lemon
J-31
Mai-1

I'm trying to make sure ive chosen varieities that don't all ripen around the same time.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit in one hole / high density
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:20:42 PM »
I enjoyed a fruit from a J-31 seedling yesterday.  I took a dozen of the seeds and put them in 5" containers and moistened the soil and put them out in the sunlight.

I have read that Jackfruit trees mostly come true to seed but not all of the time.  I  also interested in the possibility of the J-31 variety to produce later or off season fruit.

In order to get a tree with the best characteristics, I am considering planting four of the future seedlings close together.  I could either leave them there it thin out the inferior one(s).

I have an available spot which is 12' by 14'.  I was considering planting four seedlings in a square arrangement, so that they are 4' and 6' apart.

Is it feasible to just leave four trees like this long term?  If so, could I even do 2-4 seedlings even about 2' apart from each other?

Thanks!

A huge amount of Leaffooted bugs have recently discovered my Barbados Cherry tree, and have gathered in clusters on each fruit.  Some of the bugs have also found their way to my Miracle Fruit.

Two questions:

1.  Will neem oil or organic insect soap, applied regularly (every week or two) control them?  I'd like to avoid systemics.

2.  If my yard has these leaffooted bugs present, does that mean I'm likely to see similar infestations on my other trees too? (lychee, longan, jujube, jaboticaba, white sapote, avocado, persimmons, sapodilla, lemon, coconut, tomatoes?)

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why do carambola leaves fold?
« on: August 02, 2013, 09:39:31 PM »
I'm trying to figure out why my Kari Carambola tree's leaves are often folded almost completely during the day.

Would too much wind cause the leaves to do this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Homestead White Sapote
« on: July 31, 2013, 10:50:50 PM »
I just picked up a Homestead White Sapote at Excalibur today.  I was looking for another White Sapote variety (currently have a Redlands and Suebelle).

Can anyone tell me about the flavor of this variety?  I can't seem to find much information, except that it is a smaller variety tree with smaller fruit and is productive.

My asian in-laws are arriving next week, and on Wednesday I am going to be in South Florida.  I'd like to locate a Bangkok Lemon Jackfruit for them to enjoy.

Does anyone know where I might obtain one?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do these look like Emperor Lychees?
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:53:22 PM »
Here in Southwest Florida, it is now mid lychee season.  At this point, Hak Ip / Sweethearts are still on the trees but nearing the end of their harvest.  Kaimanas are at their peak.  Brewsters are just starting to be harvested.  Emperors grown at a different local farm 5 days ago were noticeably sour and not really edible.

Today I just purchased what the seller said were Emperor lychees.  However, they don't look like the trees / leaves or fruits that I remember.  I seem to remember larger fruit, redder fruit, and much smaller leaves on the trees.  And I seem to remember that Emperors are a late season lychee.  '

The tree is on the property that was owned by a former president of the Manatee Rare Fruit Council.  There are other lychee trees also present on the property: Sweet Cliff, Brewster, and Kwai Mai Pink.

The "emperors" I purchased today are fully ripe here at mid season.  Not sour or early picked.  They are somewhat smaller than Hak Ip / Sweethearts, but larger than Kwai Mai Pinks or Brewsters.

They have a medium sized seed.  The flesh to seed ratio is good (similar to the flesh: seed ratio found in a Mauritius).  The flesh is sweet, somewhat mild flavored, and does not seem to have the floral taste that Hak Ips / Sweethearts or Kwai Mai Pinks do.  The flesh is a bit firmer than Hak Ips, but otherwise similar type of flesh.  It is definitlely a softer flesh than Kwai Mai Pinks.  The outer flesh is wet, but not as drippy wet as Hak Ip / Sweethearts.

The tree size is medium to large.

The trees tend to bear heavily one year, and take the next year off.

The skin is very rough, almost sharp.  The skin is a pinkish red with some light spots of yellow.

Is this really Emperor?

Thanks,
Brad

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jujube tree problems
« on: June 07, 2013, 11:39:15 PM »
I was hoping to get some advice on a couple of issues with my Thai Giant Jujube tree.

The undersides of the mature leaves have lots of black spots on them.  Is this fungus?  What can be done about it?

There are sometimes several ants running up and down the tree, often congregating inside the new open blooms.  Is this cause for concern?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Young Sapodilla trees rubbery?
« on: June 06, 2013, 04:57:40 PM »
I have a couple of young sapodilla trees - one makok (3 yrs old or more) and one alano (2 yrs+).

The makok is about 7' tall, yet still needs to be staked because if it is unstaked, the top half of the tree just bends over on itself, like an upside down letter U.

The alano has to be staked also, and just had another large branch peel off from the winds today.

Are all sapodillas like this, or could this be the case of poor rootstock, etc.?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brogdon Avocado season?
« on: May 29, 2013, 07:16:22 PM »
I just purchased a Brogdon avocado tree.  The tag says its season is from Sept to Nov.  However, Univ of FL says it is July 15 to Sept 15.  Another reference online says July to Nov.

Can anyone give me firsthand knowledge of the fruiting season for the Brogdon?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Suebelle White Sapote
« on: May 26, 2013, 05:44:21 PM »
Does anyone know if this variety fruits throughout the year in Florida?  The Charles Boning book says it does, but I seem to remember others (Rob?) saying that White Sapotes in Florida in general fruit from mid May to mid July or thereabouts.

Thanks,
Brad

Can anyone tell me which tree has the larger mature size of the two?

Which one is more productive?

Which one would be more tolerant of a less than full sun location?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Oak mulch safe for fruit trees?
« on: May 08, 2013, 11:03:16 AM »
The local tree guy has just cut down some live oaks and silk oak trees. He has offered the mulch to me. Is it safe to mulch around my fruit trees using oak mulch? I seem to recall reading somewhere a while ago that avocado trees did not do well if they were planted around areas where Oaktree's were once living. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red lady papaya width/spacing?
« on: April 30, 2013, 10:15:56 PM »
Pine Island nursery says it attains a width of 5'.  That seems low to me based on pictures.

Is it more like 8' wide realistically?  I'm trying to space it out properly in my landscaping plans.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ruby x Supreme Guava - mature width?
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:47:06 PM »
Does anyone know the mature width of this tree/plant?  Pine Island states that it is 5 feet, but pictures online make me think that it might be more like 8 feet.

I am trying to plan the spacing in my landscaping.

Thanks!

I am applying mulch around my fruit trees, with a combination of pine, eucalyptus and other mulches (local tree trimmer dropping off whatever clean mulch becomes available).

I found a Fairchild Gardens article which referenced 6-10" deep of mulch around fruit trees.  However, other web references suggest anywhere from 2-6".

I was planning on possibly doing 8" deep of mulch.  Does anyone have recommendations?

Thanks,

Brad
