Help IDing lemon ? and pomelo ?
« on: January 04, 2020, 08:36:30 PM »
A friend moved into a new home with two mature citrus. Location is El Cajon, CA (east of San Diego). She asked for help IDing the varieties. I looked at photos from the UCR citrus page and couldn't figure it out.

The yellow one is sour like a lemon except it has a slight orange tint and the skin is not as smooth as lemons. A lemon/orange hybrid?

The green fruit looks like a pomelo except it is a lot smaller than pomelos I've seen before. Doesn't look like oro blanco or melogold grapefruit.

The "lemon" does not have the orange tint in this pic on the tree.

The pummelo is indeed a pummelo, probably a variety called Chandler,  The other fruit is some kind of a mandarin, due to it shape and the fact that the seeds are green.

Could be rough lemon, we see many here as a result of rootstocks taking over.

Hope she's prepared for the onslaught of gophers.

I would say the lemon is a meyers from the nipple on the end & serrated leaves.

Laaz, the Meyer does not have green seeds does it?  I know Mandarins do.

The only Meyer I have is a strange one. It was a cutting from my original Meyer. It has  dark green leaves, is ever bearing, looks nothing like a lemon. Round like an orange, bigger than a lemon and smooth. Flowers are purple like Meyer. I dont know why I keep it.....Meyer is so far from a good lemon....give me a good Eureka anytime. Since Meyer is a cross it does not surprise me that its an odd case.  As far as green cots on seed....mandrins do .....but I have seen others with green cots at certian times of the seasonal growth.

I really don't remember, my meyer went to the wood chipper years ago. Mandarins however don't have serrated leaves.
