A heart of gold with wow factor.
« on: October 30, 2020, 05:15:25 AM »
Sometimes a single fruit makes you go wow. Not many soursops are as good as gold and none may be worth their weight in gold, but they aren't fools gold either. Planting one of these might make me a gold digger. Anyway today my brother brought a fruit to show me today that made me go wow. I know other people have experienced the same thing with a spectacular specimen and feast your eyes on this bouncing 8lber. From one side it looks a bit like a heart.

That is a beauty A. Seems to have been influenced greatly by the lunar cycle.

Unfortunately it isn't mine but I have eaten them and cut them open before. They have bright yellow flowers, pale yellow fruit as they grow and get a slight orange tin in he yellow on ripening. The flesh is bright white, low in fiber and they are a sweeter variety. I already have whitmans, arusha, lisa/recife and morado and swore I wouldn't plant another soursop and I refused a daughter of Whitman and costa rican fibreless before. It cant cue jump my 2 lychees so something's gotta give if I plant a golden soursop but I think it is the most desirable soursop.
I will try to get a pic of the cut fruit.

Nice looking fruit! Nature is always surprising us with new color variations. Is that a chance seedling, or how did it come about?

Now that is a much more interesting question. They appear to have suddenly been acquired around 30 years ago by a couple of people at the time when starapples alva,DPI Gold and juicy pearl starapples and a number of improved tropical fruit lines were being tested on a few farms around Innisfail by Kamerunga and South Johnstone Research Stations.I believe but haven't confirmed that it was part of that program of new fruit breading and testing. When the government pulled funding the programs for commercialising new varieties were dropped and research staff sacked so tests were never followed through. Atemoyas were being trialled also in SE Queensland and the same thing happened there. I suspect it was one of those trials that was never finished. At the time Yook ho pow lychee was also just left on a few farms and never followed through with.
I am just guessing but it fits the pattern and timing of other good and new fruits that were never distributed.

I have no info on whether it was chance mutation but it must have been and foliage, fruit and flowers are affected but trees are very productive.

Oh yeah they grow true and you can tell with seedlings straight away as the foliage is bright yellow green and it is quite different from standard soursop foliage.

Come on Mike you really think we're going to believe that cockamamie story. I think it's more likely that you have been playing banjo opera music during the new and full moon

Thanks for value adding bovine and I am sure playing banjos and chanting in the moonlight to trees can induce mutations in backwoods areas.

Similar financial cuts happened here in USA, but even more drastic with experimental station either closing, being completely neglected, or totally abandoned.

Yes he knows that a few people here were at the top of the list to get some as we might not be able to get them again easily. Some people who have these unusual style fruit that I think are special or out of the ordinary don't realise it. Other fruit people see them and people don't often point out that something deserves wider dispersal. It surprises me that so many out there just are not recognised. I think one of the daughters of the Whitman fibreless is really good yet no one else I tried them with made a fuss.

Flavorwise I can't think of a more worthwhile fruit deserving of improved varieties.  Changing the texture, GETTING RID OF THE COTTON is a necessity!
