Is this raised bed large enough for two citrus trees?
« on: January 07, 2013, 04:57:49 PM »
I have a raised bed built into my deck in the back yard. I was thinking of planting my Red Lime on the right side and getting a kumquat for the other side, keeping them trimmed to eight to ten feet and planting a few pineapples around the leftover space. Is this enough room or am I asking for too much?

Looks very skinny. You may need to put up a trellis and espalier them to make it worthwhile.

If that's up against your house I'd be worried about the big potential for water and/or mold damage.

Citrus have tough and invasive roots I would not plant them so close to my house.

Put some pineapples unless you don't want something that low.

miracle fruit, pitanga, pitangatuba and red jaboticaba.

But a few of these would enjoy heavy pruning at some point.

(on second thought, that space is small! If you properly fertilize your trees, they will eventually get too big!)  maybe stick with pineapples like Murahilin suggested!

You could always use containers.

Hi MikeSid,
How much sun exposure does this side of your house get?
Time is like a river.
You cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again.
Enjoy every moment of your life!

The amount of sunlight that hits the area may influence what can be planted there.  Do you have automatic irrigation in that area or do you need a drought tolerant tree?

Moringa since it can take really heavy pruning if you need the space.

First thing Asian home owners do is pave the 3' area all around the house with concrete so they don't get termites. It's because they tend to water too much. Things like sugarcane are not supposed to grow very well in SoCal but they do for many people.

I'm mainly concerned with invasive roots, I have a wood frame house. As you can see in the pic I did seal the bed wall with roofing tar. So I should have included non-ivasive roots as a qualifier...I do want to plant a few pineapples in the bottom but figured I could probably slide a tree in..Also note there is no bottom on the bed it just goes down to the soil/sand underneath the patio.

The bed faces east...good irrigation...I have drippers installed everywhere now...

What is a safe distant to plant a citrustree (pomelo tabtum siam) from concrete floors or walls? Does it help if you keep the tree relatively small like 4 metre tall?

I don;t understand why a tree would grow roots under a concrete floor or house because there is no water there. If it is a small concrete slab then they grow under the floor to the other side where is wet soil will they also grow under a driveway from 8 metres wide?

That bed is perfect for growing vegetables.

Also, I was given a truly tiny banana plant:  it is really attractive and I understand it will form a nice bunch. I have mine planted in a bed such as yours.
