A Warm Winter?
« on: January 08, 2013, 09:49:32 PM »
News says that 2012 was hottest year on record for Lower 48 states...perhaps that indicates we are in for a warm winter?

110+ fruit trees/plants; 60+ mango trees; 9 jackfruit; 6 avocado; 3 persimmon; longan; and a dog that keeps raccoons and squirrels away.

Latimes? It's been pretty cold here in LA. On the other hand I spent the last many winters in costal San Diego and this might be what's warm for LA.

Last winter was mild enough that some things never went dormant, in SD

It don't feel like a warm winter. In fact the opposite. I've been getting frost on my car in the morning and I don't remember getting that in the past three winters.

May have to move a lot of stuff around the yard up against the house. Also tender seedlings indoors... 31 degrees is what the weather.com is forecasting. I am thinking the dragon fruit and mangoes should hold in. However, I am worried about; Green Sapote, Jackfruit, Mamey Sapote, Acai palms, and miracle fruit.

Yes, it's been a nice warm winter here in south Florida.  Low to mid 80s everyday. 86 here today. 70 for our low and very humid. We even have been getting afternoon showers every few days.  It's been great, but if we get a blast of cold air from up north, it's not going to be good with everything blooming.
Best of luck to all of you in Cali.  I hope you don't get any damage.

It's been really warm for me overall here in Ocala. We had two cold days. Been really warm besides that. I still have my lychees unprotected and they have made it so far with no damage.

It has been really warm- my tomatoes are going crazy.
We still have the rest of January and February - we could still be in for some cold.

Did you hear that Florida and California reached a treaty?  California agreed to keep the cold weather during winters and Florida agreed to keep the cool weather during summers.  Just kidding.  My sympathies to our friends in California who are having frost issues.

Grrr... go away cold weather. 34 degrees low for Thur, 31 Fri, 31 Sat, 32 Sun. Not going to be happy, well on the plus side I doubt the yard will see below 32 degrees (its sheltered nicely).
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Mr Clean,

Thanks, it is what it is... Next year it may be reverse. Last year was unusually warm. On the plus side, the Gooseberries may actually get enough chill hours to set decent fruits.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

My fruiting miracle fruit almost completely defoliated. Maybe it's too cold even indoors. Maybe not enough water. Maybe too much water. This didn't happen last year.

keep in mind, although it's the warmest year on record, it's been the 2nd most extreme, with highs and lows.  The high temps giving a false sense of spring, followed by a nice barrage of freezes, is a devastating sequence of events...in my opinion, this will happen across the USA, and cause the price of commodities produced here to increase substaintaily.  :(
