I have a Zill Dark that has been very good this year. Haven’t tried the Blackstar but most of the blacks are better than the red.

I have a grafted Black Star growing in a 15 gallon pot that set hundreds of fruits this winter.
Very sweet-Tart... like a muscadine grape almost. I have 5 Zill Dark seedling off-spring... but they have not set fruit yet.
Also... I planted the Black Star seed and now have at least 150 seedlings in my greenhouse.

So harvest season for this species is usually autumn-winter or is an ever-bearing?

Mine bloomed twice last year... late summer, then winter.
Still has fruit on it.

You are pretty far north for a winter bloom just how cold hardy are they?

I'm not sure about their hardiness.
I just assume they are tropical and quite tender.
I keep them in a greenhouse in the cold months and bring them out during the warmer months.
I'm 200 miles north of the gulf... so it gets cold here in the winter.
