Mini Guava
« on: November 17, 2017, 04:45:34 PM »
Does anybody else grow the Mini Guava? If so, is it in ground or pot. Could you share some pictures and your experience?

why grow this when you can grow a larger variety.
I prefer the thai/vietname/asian green crunchy variety.  This mini looks too much work to pick for eating.

I just don't like Thai guavas or any crunchy type of guavas. I don't eat apples and don't care much about them. I don't think there's too much work for picking small fruits of any kind.  :) This particular guava tastes good to me, this is why I grow it.

The taste is like a pink guava, pleasant. The seeds are small, so you just eat it all. The size is like a strawberry guava and the tree will be covered with flowers. You can see the flower buds in the picture, it's flowering for a second time this year and this is the first year it started to bare fruit.  It may get even better in taste next year. The tree is small and it's 3rd year I am growing it in the container. I bought it online, don't remember the name of the nursery, sorry. It was a little seedling, at least it looked like a seedling, in a 4 inch pot.

i am with you on taste as well.
i loved my large Asian White, but having different plants
also often means different fruiting times too.
My worry is that it would be full of hard seeds ?
How often and how much does it fruit ?

is it from seed ?
I got some seeds from a guy on Ebay who had 4 or 5 types of rare guava
one he said was very small, and sounded like this, but no photos of the fruit.

i also remember Canarius having one for sale...

greenman62, it's the same guava plant you posted the link of and the description is exact. My tree is possibly from the seed. So far, it fruited ones in the summer and now it's going to fruit again. It's dwarf and bushy. The seeds didn't bother me at all. I noticed that some fruits were with less a bit bigger seeds. I will post pictures of cut opend fruit later.

I also don't like most Thai guava's...but we have 2 that i like, very big and crunchy and little sweet. The pink one i don't like, also seedless is not nice so we eat with sugar or dipping. Is very healthy for colon cancer.

marklee, thank you for the picture. Is your tree in a pot or in the ground? If In the ground, how big it is? How old? Do you like the fruit?

My tree is in a 5 gallon pot and is pretty bushy. Below is a photo of the latest ripe fruit. It is a bit tart at this stage and the ones that are more ripe are milder.

My friend has one that is variegated and is small like these.

Wow, variegated? I was looking for this one for years. I saw some pics on the other forum ones but the guy who owned the variegated plant said he lost it. I would like to have some seeds if not a scion. Do you think you could ask your friend if he can sell some? My fruits are not tart at all. I will repot it in spring.

I'd be interested in some mini guava seedlings from you!
I'm planning on making a hoophouse next year and the mini guava would be perfect to grow in there!
Also the mini guava is beautiful in flower! Does it share the same nice aroma that a larger guava has?

Send me a PM around March-April.
I didn't notice any aroma but sure it looks beautiful when the tree flowers a lot.
