Should I Apply 0-0-50?
« on: September 07, 2019, 09:13:34 PM »
I've read here that applying a 0-0-50 fertilizer around this time of year may increase fruit yield.  I feed my mango trees lightly, twice yearly, with 8-3-9 plus minors.  Should I give the trees a sprinkling of 0-0-50 in the next few weeks?  I'm seeing various products available.  Is sulfate of potash the same as muriate of potash?  And I assume granular would be preferable to powder?

This month I am going to put down some 0-0-50 granular on some of my mango trees. Muriate is same as Potassium sulfate. The granular potassium sulfate is what you want. Though Har's (Guanabanas) potassium fertilizer sounds like the ultimate because it includes minor elements/trace elements..
Universal Supply in Broward gets the granular from time to time. I got two bags last year by random chance.
Address: 2171 Blount Rd, Pompano Beach, FL 33069
Phone: (954) 979-0600

The potassium sulfate powder is what is put into irrigation systems aka fertigation. It is highly dissolvable. You could use this powder on your trees as a surface fertilizer but would require frequent small doses.

Aside from Har's formulation the only form of potassium you want is the sulfate, with granular the best and the powder being usable if you are disciplined enough to hit your trees with it, small doses each few weeks. If you have lots of mulch around your trees the K2SO4 powder might chelate into the mulch and change to slow release.

I’m also applying 0-0-50 at the end of September as directed in the RFC fertilization schedule 👍

Get those babies ready for next season 😊

Har's potassium granules are coated so very nice slow release. Common 0-0-50 Granular potassium sulfate is kind of slow release. I have seen it persist in my mulch. With potassium sulfate powder bringing up the rear, but still usable for those who are disciplined.

Same as slow release nitrogen fertilizer called 8-3-9 also called Fruitilizer at Universal Supply..... Also other slow release nitrogen formulations found at Lowe's and Home Depot. The nitrogen granules in these fertilizers are polymer (plastic) coated. Har's potassium granules are polymer coated.

Muriate of Potash  = Potassium Chloride

You want sulfate of potash. K2SO4

How much should be applied?  I have a Pickering, about 7' x 7', three years in ground.  And a mature Cogshall about 15' tall and 10' wide.

Muriate of Potash  = Potassium Chloride

You want sulfate of potash. K2SO4

You are right! As in Muriatic acid the old name for Hydrochloric acid. Carbo - do not get any muriate of potash or muriate of anything. You only want sulfates. Potassium sulfate/

Where do you get 0-0-50 (So Cal).  I see Amazon has a 5lb bag for like 23.00.  I usually 10-10-10 granular once every quarter.

Look online at Southern Agriculture 0-0-50 sulfate of potash. I believe I bought 50 lbs. for $25-30 last year or the year before.

HHm. Most bags I see are 5lb bags.  I see a 50lb bag for $90+...

Old thread, wondering results 0-0-50 sulfate gave ya'll?
I just brought home a 50# bag while getting palm fert.  It's the water soluable type, not slow release.

I think potassium nitrate is a better alternative for mango, makes a nice colour and sweetness.

From what I have read the timing is best in the autumn. Soluble is better than nothing. My place to get the granular kind is Universal Supply In Broward but they usually do not have it. One day I phoned and they had it so I bought two bags 50lbs. Perhaps they now carry it all the time.
My advice for the soluble K Sulfate is toss some under the mulch and some on top of the mulch where it hopefully chelates into the mulch where it turns into slow release. Do it when things are dry so the rain does not wash your K away. Then use garden hose in small doses to water it in/
Iron drenches are expensive. Iron enthusiasts can find Ferrous Sulfate cheap on ebay. Throw this onto woodchips in a trash barrel (mix in a bit) where it will chelate into the woodchips. Must keep a bit moist with your garden hose. More on the internets about this.

Salseman told me careful cause it can kill roots.  I haven't used it yet.
A grower said put 1 tablespoon like a clock around dripline.
