Best of the New Zill Mangos (Truly Tropical)
« on: February 26, 2018, 07:06:08 PM »
I watched all three videos on Truly Tropical's YouTube Channel in which Har Mahdeem and Marlys Zill discuss the new Zill varieties, and their favorites seem to be Peach Cobbler, Juicy Peach, Fruit Punch, Cotton Candy, and Orange Essence although they had good things to say about the others.  By the way, do we have any idea if Zill will release Orange Sherbert, which is a favorite of Richard Campbell?

Orange sherbet and O-15 are next to be released.

No, Buttercream was already released last year.
O-15 has not been named ...I recall reading a post from squam256 that it was a Jakarta seedling.

I have not tasted Orange Essence, but my favorite among the others that Har and Marlys spoke about is Cotton Candy. That is an amazing mango. I also wonder why more people are not talking about Seacrest and Ugly Betty.

What's the flavor like besides super-sweet?

Buttercream and Guava mango were released last year (October 2017)

Taralay was just released recently (February 2018)
Nice Taralay trees, but on the small side.

I am rather bad at describing flavor, but they both are much more than just super sweet.  The Ugly Betty, especially, reminds me of the Malgoa from my childhood back in India. Have tasted many varieties but Malgoa remains one of the best,  if not the best, mango I have eaten.

I thought the golden Buddha was the next big thing.  It was suppose to be release in limited quantity from Combodia.  It was found in the lost city of “are you kidding me” and “where are they coming up with these names.”   :P just kidding everyone.  Not to offend anyone.  Do these mango really taste like their name imply like cotton candy?  I need to plant more mango and try more mango to understand what every one is talking about.  California is on its way to growing mango so soon i will know what everyone is describing.

When is it going to be released?

Orange Sherbert (G-32) and O-15 may be released as early as mid-summer.

My question is what kind of disease resistance and production do these trees have..it would be a bummer to buy into any of these and years later only get a few mangos a year

You guys have been able to get orange sherbet (and others yet to be released) fruit there right? Anyone tried to grow the seeds considering they are poly?

I have an orange sherbet seedling here thanks to a kind soul who brought some in and shared (and maybe someone there who sent them I guess). Might/might not be the clone?

I'll have to find the article to post on the OS and Lemon Zest, it said they were very Similar tasting fruit. The lemon zest was changed to OS but changed back quickly to LZ. It said the small gene change found the trees to be very light producers, so it was scratched since the flavor was not noticeably different. If lemon zest is a proven tree why wait or take the risk. Get the lemon zest now.

I buy plants from Zills. Either they are doing small special releases to certain customers or your sources are wrong. I was there last month and asked about buttercream they didnt have anything maybe they got new stuff for Feb. but I havent checked.

They may have run out of Buttercream, but it was released last year. Some time in October or November, if I remember correctly. The guava mango is another new release.

They do not update the list every month.  Two of my friends have buttercream in their yard.
