Insect all over my citrus
« on: March 13, 2015, 04:34:48 PM »
I haven't seen this critter before.  But, there are a number all over my citrus tree all of the sudden.  They are on both leaves and on small balls (sorry not technical) that should become flowers soon.

Finally have some activity with my long-time dormant orange so I don't want to risk destruction by an unwanted guest.

It's an interesting thing nonetheless.  Anyway, I found similar fotos from a Google search.  But, people were asking the same questions about what is is it without any reply on other sites.

This looks like one of the assassin bug species.....a beneficial/predatory insect. Here's a link.

Mature assassin bugs (wheel bug) will look like this.

The assassin bug nymph looks very similar to a stink bug nymph, but the stink bug nymphs tend to congregate in groups while the assassin bug nymphs tends to be solo.

Thank y'all for the prompt replies.  Man, my Google search must have sucked!  lol

Anyway, good to know I don't need to worry on this bug hanging around.

This forum and the people herein are great!

If you see them in groups, kill them fast.  The stink bug nymphs will destroy your fruit and vegetables.

They stink.  So use nitrile gloves and squeeze, or get a soapy bowl and knock them in it.  Pesticides have proven ineffective against them for me.  They are easy to spot and slow moving.
