What to Plant in Florida
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:19:43 PM »
Sometimes I get tunnel vision on what I should plant so Im looking for input on what other tropical fruits forum members would plant in a back yard setting.

Definitely coconut tree (1-2) for fresh coconut water in 4-5 years.
A top tier mango (LZ, Sweet Tart etc).
A sapodilla (eg. Alano).
If you have the space, a mulberry (eg. Shangri LA or Tice).
An for pot culture, a red Jaboticaba.
The Earth laughs in flowers. And bear gifts through fruits.
No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Need more info.  How much land do you have?  How many trees, etc. are you looking to plant?

There are plenty of threads that have planting recommendations (most for Florida) if you use the google search function on the forum you can find a lot of info.

With that said you can't go wrong with Mango, Avocado and Jackfruit

I would add to Khan's post above.  For avocado, I would highly recommend the Super Hass.

For mulberry, I would highly recommend Tice.

why would you recommend Tice over the others?

Taste a Tice Mulberry and you won’t have to ask that 😉

Write a list of your favorite foods. Then Write a list of the food you get at the store. From both list see what is able to grow in your area trouble free and start with the things you are most interested in growing and eating. There’s not too many things we can’t grow here in Florida, hope you’re able to get growing soon!

I have a decent size property and about 50 trees in the ground.  With your available size, I'd say you can safely squeeze about 5 decent sized trees there.  If I had to choose to only keep 5 of my trees (as much as it would pain me to do so), I'd select the following:

1. Coconut Cream Mango
2. San Pablo Custard Apple
3. Redland White Sapote
4. Sweetheart Lychee
5. Oro Negro Avocado

I think your climate is ideal for these selections as well
